Computer-Controlled Folder's Speedy Set-Up
Howitt in Nottingham (UK) has placed an order with Encore Machinery for an MB Prestige Fold Net 52 computer-controlled, buckle folder.
It is also claimed by Encore Machinery that another advantage of the MB prestige Fold Net 52 is the short set-up time for repetitive jobs because the speed, sheet gap, shingle delivery, suction duration, counters, double sheet detection and paper travel control are set automatically.
It is also provides fold correction to within 0.1mm whilst the machine is running.
Paul Williams, production manager of Y Lolfa, said: "We had been using a mechanical folder, which took a long time to set up and adjust and required a specialist folding operator.

B2 Folder Enables Complex Jobs Growth
Priory Press, commercial printers in Dunstable, has traded in its old folder for a new MB CAS 52 computer-controlled B2 folder from Encore Machinery.
After we bought a Komori 228 two-colour perfector, which operates alongside our four-colour Komori 426 press, the folder was not quick enough to handle the volume of printed material we are producing." Y Lolfa, which is in Aberystwyth (Wales) is a publisher and a commercial printer.
It specialises in Welsh language and tourist publications, publishing between 50 to100 new titles each year.
The commercial side of the business prints a range of material from business cards to magazines for companies in Wales.
Williams, who first saw the MB Prestigefold system being demonstrated at a print exhibition, added: "We realised how much quicker and easier it was to set up than our existing folder.
It doesn't require a specialist folder operator because the set-up is automated and the folds are shown on the display screen.
Once you understand the type of fold you need, the machine does the rest and adjustment is minimal." He explained that the company did not place the order immediately but, as the year progressed and the bottlenecks increased, it was decided to make the investment.
As well as being three times faster than the company's old machine, one of the benefits of the new folder is its versatility.
And Williams continued: "We specified a configuration with six folds on the first unit and four folds on the second, which means it folds A4, A5 and 200mm x 200mm square books, as well as commercial print." Williams explained: "The machine is very quick and this is useful to keep up with the four-colour press and the perfector.
We can fold an A4 sheet at 20,000 an hour, which is faster than one operator can take them off the conveyor and box them.
We can also put repetitive jobs or types of fold in the memory, so we can come back to it again a week later and just bring it up on screen.
The folder automatically sets itself up and off it goes.
This can be very useful for book work.
Four operators can now run the machine as well as me, which gives us maximum flexibility as they are all multi-tasking." And he concluded: "The installation was very straight forward.
The people at Encore know what they are talking about, which is very reassuring.
We had a good training session and more often than not Encore sorts out any queries over the telephone, although the folder is proving to be very reliable.".
