York Reprographics Group (YRG), a UK pre-press house, has installed an Esko CDI Spark 4260 with multi-beam Optics 80 at its York site.

York Reprographics Group (YRG), a UK pre-press house, has installed an Esko CDI Spark 4260 with multi-beam Optics 80 at its York site The system replaces a CDI twin beam system that was operational since 1996

YRG has three Esko installations across sites in York and Manchester supported by Esko's Scope integrated packaging software suite and colour management software for packaging and labels.

YRG director Dave Cowley said: "YRG is a specialist centre for flexo plate and sleeve production, multi-process reprographics and brand management for the printing industry, as well as a wide range of end-user clients and brand owners.

We have had a long and successful relationship with Esko's research and development team for flexographic imaging." He added: "Our company provides external partnerships supplying Esko's CDI range along with training for workflow and colour management and technical support.

Our recent investment in the CDI Spark 4260 is an evolvement of our strategy to push boundaries and continue investing in the latest equipment on the market." He explained that the CDI Spark 4260 is a bigger, faster high-end machine, giving YRG maximum speed and productivity, thereby dramatically improving its turn-around-times.

Bob Hollingsworth, YRG's technical director, said: "The CDI Spark 4260 is a part of a larger investment programme, which includes a plate processor for thermal photopolymer processing.

We are delighted with the results to date.

This is the first installation in Europe.

The laser technology in the new CDI Spark 4260 has improved considerably and has new intelligence allowing the laser head to skip as it passes non-image areas during the imaging process." He added that all YRG's equipment is calibrated and integrated.

The company can process multiple jobs at any time, selecting required jobs, assigning the relevant ticket and launch.

The process could not be easier.

Hollingsworth added: "Another extremely useful feature of the Esko software is the option to automate communication.

When a file is released to the CDI an email can be sent to the customer with a PDF attached.

Customers really appreciate the ability to see the exact progress and status of their jobs within the workflow.

We also use Esko's superior Kaleidoscope colour management tools.

Colour management is a challenge for printers today.

In the old days we would produce a plate for each customer but today, however, we work much closer with our partners and execute meaningful fingerprints on their presses, which allow us to provide high precision, colour accurate proofs with can be matched easily on individual presses." Esko believes that YRG is a centre of excellence for colour management and is a chosen partner of Esko in developing Kaleidoscope.

YRG was established in 1974 and the company has expanded significantly, especially over the last five years with multi-million pound investments in processes and people, including a purpose-built sleeve factory in 2003.

YRG operates over three closely aligned sites in York and Manchester, with it's HQ in York housing pre-press and flexographic platemaking.

The company operates multi-process facilities including flexo, litho, letterpress, silkscreen and gravure.

Its digital operation began in 1989, with 75 per cent of products for the label market within the food industry.

The company also supplies the wallpaper and decorative markets, along with other flexible applications.

Esko's Backstage server is implemented at YRG HQ in York alongside five seats of Esko's Packedge, a packaging pre-press editor, part of Scope - Esko's integrated packaging software suite, alongside Colortone retouching and two more seats of Packedge at YRG Manchester.

Bob Hollingsworth explained: "The CDI Advance is also in Manchester and the new CDI Spark 4260 is in York.

You could say that we are fans of Esko.

You can certainly say that Esko's systems are supporting YRG in a challenging marketplace.".
