The desired growth of plate production for flexible packaging and labelling was the main influence in the installation of a full EskoArtwork CDI flexographic suite for Pamarco Global Graphics.

The system, which includes Esko's Deskpack, JDF workflow and Webcenter software at Pamarco's Imaging Division in Nelson, Lancashire (UK) and it is already providing time savings and increased productivity By installing the full EskoArtwork CDI flexographic suite, Pamarco plans to grow its Imaging Division to service larger corrugated packaging producers in the UK and make inroads in to the flexible packaging and labelling sector

Esko said that Pamarco has customers in the offset, gravure and flexo markets and 48 per cent of its global business is in the flexo graphic market producing anilox rolls and plates.

There are three sites in the UK, two in Warrington, Cheshire, in addition to the one in Nelson.

Pamarco is also developing and building integrated systems with MIS and JDF software linking its three divisions in the UK.

Pamarco made investments of around GBP400,000 in 2007.

An additional investment of GBP100,000 in proofing technology is planned for 2008.

It is said that the investment will play a key role in Pamarco's initiative, called 'value in print', which is said to be designed to add value and maximise its customer service.

The value in print team will be led by Parmaco's technical director, Dudley Underwood, who is also technical director of EFTA, who will address improvements in productivity, quality of product and consistency.

An analysis of Pamarco's business in the UK will research every area of production and highlight the waste, downtime and inefficiencies that can be improved upon.

The emphasis will be on fusion and integration.

By assessing the efficiency of day-to-day operations, Pamarco said that its goal is to provide maximum value and create new market opportunities for its customers.

According to EskoArtwork Pamarco is well equipped to serve its present customer base, including converters in the corrugated packaging markets, and it is now looking to capture new customers, such as brand owners.

The investment in EskoArtwork equipment provides the latest technology for digital flexo and platemaking, whilst providing the integration tools needed to link multiple divisions in to one management information system.

Dave McBeth, vice president of Pamarco's sales and operations, commented: "This major investment is all part of a fundamental strategy to integrate our systems and link our three divisions in to one operation in the UK.

We have a core team of industry experts working for Pamarco in IT, pre-press, production and platemaking." Steve Sullivan, Pamaraco's plant manager at Nelson, is said to have extensive experience in pre-press and is briefed to underpin the business with sound, reliable and integrated systems.

He explained the company's choice of EskoArtwork: "We looked at several suppliers.

EskoArtwork satisfied all of our requirements at the highest level.

The strength of its workflow software, underpinned by its Backstage server with its modular flexibility is the perfect choice for us as we move forward in to flexible labelling and packaging." Another factor in the selection criteria was that EskoArtwork's software integrates perfectly with Pamarco's existing management information system (MIS) called Caes.

Sullivan added: "We are working with the JDF capabilities in EskoArtwork's workflow suite and integrating the Backstage server with our MIS to link up our three divisions.

As we streamline our operation and examine cost and time savings, this will become the perfect business management tool from ordering functions through production to invoicing." He continued to explain "In the pre-press studio, EskoArtwork's fully automated workflow system has cut down manual interrogation of files.

Operators can now use their time more efficiently.

We are also in the process of installing Esko's Webcenter to improve file management and remote access." Pamarco has reported that in the platemaking room, the large format Esko CDI Spark 5080 printer with Optics 40 has provided speed increases for plate production and is accelerating throughput.

The company added that quality and shape of the dot on the plate is immediately recognised and the immediate improvements proved that the installation of EskoArtwork's systems was a wise decision.

Dave McBeth added: "To achieve our goals and open up our service to new markets we have taken some serious decisions.

Employing industry experts and putting a core team in to IT, pre-press, production and platemaking has been a key move.

With EskoArtwork's workflow suite we will be able maximise the value of all three of our businesses and complete the jigsaw.".
