When Duncan Gilchrist, director and general manager at Trinity Mirror Printing Saltire and his team set out to find a new mailroom system, they had a number of key objectives on their agenda They wanted to improve finishing performance and inserting capacity and to achieve higher production flexibility

Following an extensive evaluation period of over two years, TMP Saltire has confirmed that it will replace its existing Muller-Martini equipment with a complete new mailroom from Ferag AG.

TMP Saltire prints over 30,000,000 products a month and producing both national and regional newspapers, including the Daily Record, Sunday Mail, Scottish Daily Mirror and Racing Post.

The new mailroom will be equipped with four Ferag mailroom lines consisting of MSD-M inserting drums, unwinding and Rollstream pre-collecting equipment, Ferag's SNT trimming technology and the Streamstitch in-line stitching system.

All lines are due to be installed during 2006.

Gilchrist explained: "The key factors that clinched it for Ferag were lower equipment lifetime cycle costs, the extremely small footprint and the flexibility and performance of Ferag's leading-edge modular technology.

Quite aside from those factors, we were looking for a supplier that would go the extra mile by providing us with a bespoke modular solution so we can tailor the system in future, according to our production requirements.

Ferag has a great deal of experience in designing and manufacturing equipment and the company's highly automated, modular finishing systems meet the market's stringent criteria." For example, the current technology allows TMP Saltire to produce stitched and trimmed products of up to 260 pages, he added.

That facility, in association with the improved flexibility of both insert range and collated combination, will provide a world-class manufacturing platform.

The installation at TMP Saltire will also include Streamstitch, Ferag's in-line stitching system.

For example, when producing spine-stitched, semi-commercial products, Streamstitch integrates the stitching unit in to the conveyor system.

The inserting drum then gathers the cover printed on coated paper and the sections printed on newsprint, and the stitcher, which can be brought on-line or off-line as required, then stitches cover and sections at production speeds of up to 40,000 copies per hour.

A subsequent three-side trim can further enhance the product, said the company.

Throughout the entire process, the product is transported by the UTR gripper, without any additional transfers.

Gilchrist commented: "When the new mailroom lines are in place, Ferag's Matrix switch and the MSD-M 1:1 and 2:1 type inserting drums will allow us to insert at full press speed with maximum operational capacity.

The unwinding equipment and Ferag's Rollstream will enable productive insertion of pre-prints, supplements and CDs in to the main jacket." Gilchrist stressed that the commitment by Ferag AG and WRH Marketing UK to work in partnership with TMP Saltire to develop a new standard in performance and customer service support provides a real competitive advantage.

He added: "We are confident that the expertise shown by Ferag and the WRH Marketing UK team and their willingness to work with us as part of a close-knit team will make this complex installation a success.

The modularity of the mailroom system will provide exciting opportunities for our customers." Ferag's sales director, Jurg Mockli, commented: "This is a challenging and complex project and our team is working very closely with TMP Saltire to produce a mailroom system that exactly matches their requirements.

We are constantly enhancing our equipment according to customers' feedback to provide added value to printers and eventually publishers, advertisers and newspaper readers.

As a result, our customers benefit from made-to-measure solutions from a single source.".
