This year's FINAT World Congress - hosted jointly by FINAT and the Italian self-adhesive labelling association, GIPEA - focussed on the way that label converters are achieving world-class status.
The congress heard that such status could be gained in a number of different ways, from quality control to succession management and through trends analysis and keeping abreast of developing technology.
The keynote address was from Andrea Pininfarina in his role as vice-president of the federation of Italian industry, Confindustria.
Assografici, the Italian printing industry association and GIPEA both supported his broad view of business today with analyses of the print industry in general and the label industry in particular.
FINAT's managing director, Jules Lejeune, reported on trends in labelstock consumption.
An address on the intricacies of doing business across borders and continents concluded the session.
Innovation and trends were the subjects covered by the second session, which strongly focussed on smart labelling - including RFID - and the possibilities it offers for narrow-web converting.
The final session was devoted exclusively to converter excellence and nine companies from across the globe showed delegates how they had achieved success in some key aspect of the self-adhesive label business.
Open committee meetings and a workshop on FINAT's newly-researched and published End User Market Study completed the formal programme.
The Congress was also the venue for the presentation of the prizes in the FINAT International Labelling Competition - now in its 25th year.
It was also the opportunity to introduce the incoming president of FINAT, David Harrisson from converters Skanem Group, which will spearhead FINAT's strategic activities for the next two years.
The FINAT Annual Congress 2006 will take place from June 7-10 in Warsaw (Poland).
