Workflow's New Tools Boost Efficiency
Fujifilm Graphic Systems has incorporated new proofing features in to its Open Workflow system.
Pathway Submit is claimed to enable jobs to be created either directly or imported from a management information system (MIS) and be set-up for remote file submission and processing via JDF.
Using a job profile and JDF imposition template, a job folder can be set up on either the production FTP site or a customer's FTP site.
The job is then created automatically in Open Workflow and an email is sent to the customer advising the job is waiting for his files.

Violet Platesetter Improves Quality And Deliveries
LEA Printers has installed a Fujifilm Luxel Vx-9600 violet B1 platesetter at its Orpington (UK) premises as part of its move to violet CTP.
The customer simply browses to the files for the job and drags and drops them in.
The files are then automatically transferred to the remote Fuji Open Workflow.
Once received, the files are automatically picked up by the system and pre-flighted.
At that stage a pre-flight report can be sent back to the client so that the errors can be addressed, said Fujifilm.
Alternatively, the workflow can repair the files automatically using Pitstop Server action lists associated with that client or job.
Once pre-flight is successful the files are then automatically trapped, RIPped, imposed, proofed and if required, plotted to plate without any operator intervention, added the company.
Remote job submission with Pathway Submit is said to provide the ability to offer a 24-hour, seven-day service to customers, as files can be fed in to the system overnight and customers will immediately be notified in real-time if a problem has occurred.
In the morning when the operator arrives, problems may have been automatically corrected or any problems have already been solved or highlighted overnight, ensuring a smoother and quicker workflow.
The system can even email customers automatically to chase missing pages that are required to meet a print deadline.
The job profile in Open Workflow can be set to automatically place the pages for customer approval via Fuji Remote Approval.
The proofs are posted on-line and an automated message is sent to the customer telling them the proofs are available for review.
The customer can log on to the website and view the proofs, with the ability to either sign them off or post comments regarding the content and layout.
Notification that the customer has looked at the proofs is automatically sent back to the printer or repro-house, enabling them to make any relevant changes or proceed with making the plates.
Alternatively, the latest version of Open Workflow includes an automation feature, which means that once the pages have been approved on-line, the information is transferred back in to the workflow and imposition proofs or plates are made automatically, without any user intervention.
The site tracks and displays comments made by the printer and the customer, so all job history and decisions can be traced if necessary, said the company.
Andy Walker, workflow manager at Fujifilm Graphic Systems, said: "By continually automating the workflow, we are helping customers to improve their turn-around times and, therefore, decreasing costs.
Enabling remote submission and proofing helps to further improve this.
The system now enables clients to remotely submit and approve proofs online from anywhere in the world." Pathway Remote and Remote Approval are both options on the Open Workflow and will be available in June, he added.
Walker explained that the open nature of Open Workflow means it is compatible with more than 150 different output devices from a wide range of manufacturers.
Unlike competitive products, users are not limited to outputting to just a single supplier's output device and so are not tied to one vendor in the future.
They are free to choose an output device and workflow system that best meets their needs.
He claimed that the workflow is easy to use with a simple user interface to minimise training.
Features including automatic in-RIP trapping, integrated pre-flight, built-in OPI, 'RIP-once, plot-many' digital proofing, job management, post-RIP imposition, CIP3 file compatibility are available.
The system is also claimed to have been proven to help reduce waste, streamline operations and ensure maximum productivity.
Open Workflow is also said to be compatible with several different MIS systems including Hi-Flex, Shuttleworth and Graphisoft.
