Fuji Photo Film will become the holding company of Fujifilm Holdings Corporation from October 1 to provide strategic management of the entire Fujifilm Group.
With the change, the Fujifilm Group will shift to a new group management structure.
Fujifilm Holdings will be directly responsible for the two major operating companies, Fujifilm Corporation and Fuji Xerox, with the management team selected from members of both current companies.
Fujifilm will continue to expand its business domain by adding a diverse range of systems to its core technologies.
That will include the graphic arts business with the main focus on printing materials and the documents business dealing primarily with copiers and printers.
The company's flat panel display materials business, in which Fujifilm has developed a protective polarising film used in LCDs and the medical imaging and life science businesses will also feature as parts of the organisation.
With the shift to a holding company structure, Fujifilm said that it has decided to change the company name to reflect the intended expansion in to domains beyond photography, whilst inheriting the assets of Fujifilm, which is an established corporate brand.
In-line with the strategic change, Fujifilm has announced the completion of a new core research and development facility to serve the Fujifilm Group, the Fujifilm Advanced Research Laboratories.
Fujifilm commented that it will cross-fertilise the knowledge and methods of disparate fields to create new technologies aided by the strengthened collaboration within Fujifilm group companies, such as Fuji Xerox and Fujinon.
The company will also promote alliances with other companies, as well as industrial-academic collaborations.
The research and development centre will include an open-plan space designed to bring together researchers from disparate fields and encourage the exchange of ideas as well as the open laboratory, which will enable researchers to launch joint experiments with external partners.
By including various design concepts created by the researchers themselves in the laboratory, Fujifilm intends to develop a research group aiming at market creation from the perspective of customer value.
