Scuff-Free Matte Film Is Step Forward For Books

A GBC Commercial Laminating Solutions Group product story
Edited by the Printingtalk editorial team Jul 4, 2008

GBC Commercial Laminating Solutions Group has launched its Scuff-Free Matte Film to protect and enhance the look of printed materials.

Scuff-Free Matte Film has a combination of polypropylene and an abrasion-resistant coating and its matte finish is claimed to minimise glare whilst preserving image colour and providing a durable, scratch-resistant surface to protect book covers, brochures and packaging applications.

GBC said that the film has been engineered to accept UV spot coating, thus allowing for greater flexibility on the design side to create a greater visual impact.

The matte finish is claimed to give a luxurious appearance that attracts the buyer's attention and increases the perceived value of the products on display.

The company said that matte laminating film has long been regarded with mixed feelings throughout the book industry.

The appearance that matte film gives to book covers was nearly eliminated by its propensity to scuff and scratch, causing the desired effect to virtually disappear.

However, GBC's film's abrasion-resistant formulation eliminates scuff and scratch marks without compromising the lustrous look and feel of traditional matte finishes, added the company.

Customers in the publishing and commercial print market appreciate the application versatility of the Scuff-Free Matte film, said Arnout Janssen, GBC's marketing director for the EMEA region.

He explained: "Prior to the advent of our Scuff-Free Matte Film printers had to use plastic wrappings to preserve their publications from scratching during shipping but now it is no longer an issue.

The Scuff-Free film is three times more durable compared to other untreated matte laminate films and the scratches and scuffing have virtually disappeared.

It is of great value to them and priced exactly right in-line with other laminating products.

In addition, customers don't have to shrink-wrap every book they produce, which is another great advantage." The Scuff-Free Matte Film is claimed to allow printers to print dark colours without fear of scuffing or marring, thus creating and maintaining a luxurious, high value appearance.

Because the new film accepts most UV spot coating, embossing and other finishing technique, whilst being three times more scratch resistant than traditional matte polypropylene films.

The film is said to reduce returns to the publisher and ultimately helps to ensure increased sales with higher margins for publishers for book printers and booksellers.

Moreover, the GBC Scuff-Free Matte Film accepts animal-based and synthetic-based glues, making it suitable for the packaging industry as well.
