W Digamma, a member of the SMG group, has doubled its complement of GMG Colorproof o4 proofing systems within a year.

W Digamma, a member of the SMG group, has doubled its complement of GMG Colorproof o4 proofing systems within a year The company, a specialist in pre-press production for magazines with clients including Prisma Presse, Groupe Figaro and EMAP France, produces between 3,000 and 3,500 pages

Herve Brandt, sales director for Fuji France, a GMG reseller, which has had been dealing with W Digamma for 20 years, said: "W Digamma has stringent requirements in terms of quality.

When we put forward the GMG system we encountered some resistance, as our client thought that such a cost-efficient product would not be able to produce the top quality results they demanded.

As a result, we installed one Colorproof o4 so that the company could observe first-hand the technical benefits it was looking to achieve." Consequently, in November 2004, Gilles Chevallier, managing director of W Digamma, placed an order for GMG's Colorproof o4 to fit two Epson Stylus Pro 4000 inkjet printers.

Within just a few months a third order was placed, followed by a fourth earlier this autumn when a Colorproof o4 was installed on an Epson Stylus Pro 9600 large format printer.

"I was immediately impressed by Colorproof o4.

It met our clients' needs, and therefore our needs.

We've been waiting for exactly this kind of system to come along for a long time," said Gilles Chevallier.

He added: "As Colorproof was already being used by our gravure printing partners, we were able to adapt it to each of our clients' specifications.

We previously used Iris and Cromalin systems, but they were less accurate than the GMG system.

Within the past 12 months, we have been using it for all of our clients." According to Chevallier, one of the advantages of Colorproof is the close collaboration with printers that it enables.

Even though the initial setting of calibration profiles may be an arduous task, it is largely compensated for by the unprecedented level of precision achieved.

"First we set up profiles according to printer, machine and paper type for each of the magazines, then validated the profiles with the printer and the client.

A further benefit is that if one of the parameters changes, we don't have to start from scratch, and if nothing has to change then so much the better," continued Chevallier.

He added that there has been a significant increase in speed for straight output.

In addition, the improvement in precision has a positive effect on his company, as it enables the business to secure customer loyalty and to build an excellent reputation amongst printers.

"The implementation of Colorproof o4 has changed our corporate culture.

Before, pre-press suppliers could provide their clients with a somewhat 'enhanced' proof.

However, that wasn't entirely reproducible because of the greater colour spectrum required for gravure printing in comparison to offset.

Sometimes the client was disappointed with the printed result.

The GMG solution has resolved this problem," explained Chevallier.

W Digamma also uses the GMG Colorserver module, which allows for the conversion of one colour space to another, from offset to gravure, for example.

For advertisers that generally provide their specifications according to offset standards, the gravure printer has to then convert the space according to the specific gamut of the gravure press.

GMG said that use of the software has become widespread amongst printers to convert advertising.

W Digamma processes its clients' advertisements prior to sending to the printer and uses the specified standard for the proofs.

As a result, the Colorserver module ensures a true reproduction of advertising pages, irrespective of the magazine title or printing specifications.

As W Digamma specialises in chromatic image processing, it has to be more precise and since it works with clients who predominantly use gravure printing, the demands for reproduction are that much higher.

GMG said that it offers pre-press operators added value by enabling them to deepen file conversion (conversion of RGB colour spaces to CMYK) skills and to incorporate the idea of specific conversion profiles at the same time.

"GMG is a precise communication tool, which we just wouldn't be without," concluded Gilles Chevallier.
