Printing Companies Only 60%-65% Efficient Claim
Improving productivity is the most important challenge facing printing companies today, according to management consultancy Girus.
A complete set of tools designed with the aid of input from managers in the printing industry, the productivity Toolkit is said to be available for front line managers to control productivity in the print room.
The toolkit comprises a suite of software modules that measure, analyse and report on data collected directly from print production machines.
On each press, a 'smart' machine interface measures every metre of material used and every second of machine activity to provide an insight in to the efficiency of the production process, said Girus.

Drag And Drop Print Scheduling's Instant Feedback
Girus has launched the latest addition to its suite of software and data collection tools for print productivity management - Girus Schedule.
The acquisition of information is automated, accurate and presented to the manager in a way that makes sense, claimed the company.
The Girus Virtual Shop Floor is said to allow the print manager to see at a glance the current progress of all machines, in real time.
Machines running inefficiently, or behind schedule are highlighted to draw the manager's attention, ensuring that corrective action is applied where necessary.
The Girus Reports provides the analysis required to measure job, machine or operator performance.
Girus Reporter will help identify weaknesses in the production operation and, thereby, form the basis of a lean manufacturing plan for the plant, which will in turn provide productivity improvements for the company, claimed Girus.
Girus Trends, takes the most important productivity information gathered and creates key performance indicators (KPIs) that can be used to benchmark each piece of production machinery.
The KPI are gathered daily and over time will build in to a data set that will indicate trends in the productivity of individual machines, or the plant as a whole.
KPIs can be used to measure the effectiveness of changes implemented in the production process and provide feedback quantifying the effect of the change.
The Girus Schedule complements the Girus reporting tools and allows the print manager to plan and schedule jobs in a more efficient manner, said the company.
As well as being a job scheduling tool in its own right, the Dynamic Scheduler uses real time progress data directly from the print machines to update the work schedules and indicate the knock-on effects to the schedule further down the line.
Girus ASP rounds off the Girus Productivity Toolkit by providing continuous access to information.
Utilising the internet, Girus ASP provides the transport mechanism to provide the information compiled by the Girus Productivity Toolkit to any computer in the world with a suitable web browser and access and the relevant security passwords, added Girus.
