Demand faced by the printing industry grows by the day for top quality prints and more printing companies are following the trend and moving towards ISO recognised standards, according to GMB Digital Technologies GMB added that ISO 12647-2 is the most popular standard throughout Europe and is proven to be the way forward for companies

Trevor Molyneux, managing director of GMB Digital Technolgies said, that earlier in his career, working for GretagMacbeth, for t20 years, he had seen trends come and go but most of those trends have always followed a route of being more efficient and more productive.

The ISO 12647-2 is one of those standards that motivate all concerned in each department of the printing process, in Molyneux's opinion.

Press Sign software, piloted by Bodoni Systems, is claimed to allow the operator to sign off his press with the minimum of fuss and also allows the monitoring of all the latest standards based around the ISO 12647-2 cost-effectively.

GMB said that Press Sign is interfaced with the Eye-One Spectrophotometer, which has been the favourite across all industries from photographers, RIP manufactures and monitor companies around the world.

The integration of the Eye-One in to Press Sign keeps the overall cost of having total control at the end of every press, an affordable reality, claimed GMB.

Graphics show if the desired results are being achieved and, if not, then Press Sign will indicate which colour to alter on press.

Operators just need to select a paper type and measure the sign off strip and Press Sign will do the rest, working with spectral and density readings from the GretagMacbeth Eye-One spectrophotometer, measuring the entire strip in one pass, added the company.

According to GMB setting the right dot gain curve can normally be difficult but Press Sign provides tools to set the correct dot gain curve.

The sheet can be read with the Eye-One and in a few seconds it is claimed operators will have the plate adjustment curve to add to the plate or imagesetter.

Trevor Molyneux commented: "We all know what it is like to have a customer standing next to the press when you are trying to get them to sign off a pass sheet.

It's hard work.

Press Sign allows everyone concerned to work to one standard and to achieve the same standard time after time resulting in fewer visits from the customer at sign off time." He added that Press Sign can account for dry back and objectively measures the colours, grey balance and trapping, for instance, whilst removing subjective disputes about colour quality from the print run.

Molyneux explained: "Press Sign is not only a measurement and checking tool it's also a teaching tool providing printers with the means to reach the ISO 12647-2 standard.

It's easy to meet the standard want with Press Sign.

The step-by-step procedure takes users through the process of matching the press to the required standard." Press Sign reports CIE Lab values for CMYK primaries, density values for CMYK, dot gain (tonal value increase - TVI) for CMYK, grey balance, overprint values, ink trapping and paper colour.
