Goodman Baylis has installed a Heidleberg six colour and coater UV offset press with an X3 extended delivery.

Managing director Ian Cranston said: "We've been in UV printing for a decade but this new press is the genuine article - offering something no one else can currently offer.

This genuinely is ahead of its time." Goodman Baylis chairman Clive Parkes travelled to the USA to see the equipment in action and to talk to current owners of the press before making the final decision to go ahead with the purchase.

Parkes was impressed by what he saw in the USA: "It's quite amazing.

The brighter nature of the inks and the fact that each colour can be immediately cured' after application to the sheet with very little absorption into the substrate means that higher print quality levels can be achieved on lesser grades of paper than with conventional inks.

UV inks' increased opacity provides the optical appearance of increased ink density and higher optical colour saturation on the printed substrate.

Ultra violet printing systems can achieve enhanced print quality compared with those attainable with conventional sheet fed offset ink systems." Goodman Baylis also cited the benefits of printing on non-paper substrates such as styrene and metallised mylar, for instance, where stability is important.

The ability to print effectively on non-paper substrates could open other possibilities for designers and print buyers alike.
