Creative and pre-press professionals that use Hewlett-Packard printers and scanners can now achieve more consistent and accurate colour with new colour management tools.

HP colour management systems, powered by GretagMacbeth technology, are now bundled with HP printers and scanners.

In an expansion of the partnership it began last year with GretagMacbeth, Hewlett-Packard now provides the HP Colorimeter with its Graphic Professional software (GP) which includes a range of printers and one of its high-end scanners.

The option is available with the Photosmart 8750gp studio quality A3 eight-ink photo printer, or the Designjet 30gp A3+, the Designjet 90gp A2+ and Designjet 130gp A1+ professional photo-quality printer with internal colour sensoring technology for colour accuracy and the Scanjet 8200gp, a 4800 dots per inch (dpi) pro scanner.

The HP Colorimeter, a version of the GretagMacbeth Eye-One Display 2 monitor calibration and profiling software, iss aid to provide accurate monitor calibration and profiling for all types of monitors, including those on laptops.

Accurate on screen colour enables the user to make reliable colour based decisions and it means that the monitor can be used as a reliable soft proofing colour workstation.

An accurate on-screen preview helps users to improve productivity by reducing rework and reprints, saving time and consumables, said GretagMacbeth.

The HP Colorimeter is bundled with a customised HP Edition of GretagMacbeth's Eye-One Match colour management software plus a set of generic ICC output profiles created with GretagMacbeth Profilemaker 5 software.

In addition, Hewlett-Packard is bundling the HP Spectrophotometer (an OEM version of the Eye-One Pro device) together with the HP Color Laserjet 9500gp printer targeted for in-house publishing applications.

The Spectrophotometer can be used for calibrating and profiling both displays and output devices, ensuring the accurate and predictable colour for the best possible colour match between monitor and final output.

The bundle includes the HP Edition of Eye-One Match software for profiling and calibration of displays and CMYK and RGB (small test chart) output profiling.

The Color Laserjet 9500gp is said to enable users to quickly and efficiently produce short runs of promotional documents, from booklets to A3 posters, using a variety of print media.

Existing HP customers can now also buy the Spectrophotometer as an additional accessory to add colour management functions to their existing HP printer or any printer outside the gp solutions category.

Mark Geeves, the vice president, worldwide business development at GretagMacbeth, said: "Through our partnership with Hewlett-Packard, GretagMacbeth is providing new quality and ease-of-use standards to the creative and pre-press professional, supporting a seamlessly connected colour workflow.

HP's customers will benefit from reduced rework (and reprints) thereby saving time, ink and paper and achieving a higher level of productivity.

For creating and delivering artwork, colour management is an essential component to ensure colour consistency across all media." And Winfried Tilke, Hewlett-Packard's business manager for Mac-Connect on the imaging and personal systems group, Europe, Middle East and Africa, added: "The new gp printer and scanners are part of HP's graphic arts initiative, launched in 2003, to provide complete systems to the creative professional.

Our systems are tailored to specific workflows and are designed to improve price and performance ratios.

With our tailored solutions we are maximising the out-of-the-box experience, especially for those users who are new to colour management.
