B and B Press has completed a bindery upgrade with the installation of several Horizon machines from Graphic Arts Equipment.

B and B Press has completed a bindery upgrade with the installation of several Horizon machines from Graphic Arts Equipment (GAE) The Rotherham UK business has bought a TC-8 collating tower, SPF FC-20 book production units, a new Touch Bind BQ-270 perfect binder and a new AFC-546 six-plate Touch Folding system

The order was completed by two Perfecta 115 TVC guillotines - the first to be installed in the UK since G.A.E became UK agents, claimed the company.

Sales and marketing manager at B and B Press Derek Hurst said that the bindery was one of several areas that needed to be upgraded because of the company's rising multicolour press production.

"We have experienced 20% growth that was mainly driven by our four and five colour sales.

We're now updating the rest of our operation so we can better manage the increased throughput, this means the most modern and productive equipment available for all departments," he added.

The two Perfecta guillotines have many advantages over the earlier machines they replaced, according to bindery manager Phil Moxon.

"We kept having to recalibrate and update our old guillotines to comply with health and safety legislation, but there are no issues at all with the new Perfectas.

There are plenty of excellent features, such as the stainless steel bed, quick knife change, and slot-free table that prevents dust getting inside the machine and causing wear on the screw mechanism," he said.

Another new GAE product installed by B and B is the AFC-546 automated folding machine.

"Until that machine was introduced, there was no way you could find a six-plate folding machine at its price," said Moxon.

"It is capable of a huge range of fold profiles, and changes between them in an instant via a touch-screen control," he continued.

Perfect binding was also targeted by the company as part of its modernisation resulting in the replacement of an old BQ-240 with its descendant, the BQ-270.

"Our old binder produced over a million books, but we needed something which was faster to set up," said Moxon.

"The BQ-270 has two application rollers which turn in opposite directions to give a better glue penetration.

It's a more productive machine and gives us a better product," he added.

A new SPF-20 stitch/fold/trim unit with DESTA pressing unit has been added to one of the company's existing Horizon TC-16 collators, running alongside an existing stitch, fold and trim line.

Completing the order from G.A.E was a new TC-8 collator tower.

B & B Press began trading in 1958 and now occupies 35,000sq ft, which includes a retail office equipment and stationery unit.
