The development of the short to medium run saddle stitched books led to an investment in a Horizon Stitchliner system that has transformed operations at Rumbold Holland.
Guillotine Provides Speed For Print Franchise
The need for speed prompted Alphagraphics' Sheffield print franchise to install one of Horizon's APC-61II 61cm fully-automated programmable hydraulic guillotines.
Beck's managing director, Kevin Beck, explained the reasons behind the spend on the 20-station book production line.
He said: "Margins are getting tighter and run lengths are getting shorter all the time, so we needed a highly automated machine and the Horizon is designed with quick set-ups in mind.
Our make-readies are now slashed from over an hour per job to a couple of minutes.
We also like the way the Horizon is engineered.
It's heavy enough to be solid and sturdy, but light and compact enough to move if necessary." Beck added: "As a trade finisher we have to be versatile and we are confident the Horizon will tackle a range of work, we even expect to push it beyond the official specifications, particularly with stock sizes and weights.
We also like the fact you can split the two towers and achieve continuous production." Within a few weeks of installation the new investment had already begun to pay dividends, said GAE.
Beck commented: "It is giving us more consistent results, saving a lot of time and making us more competitive.
We don't like to buy equipment until it has been thoroughly tested and accepted by the market, and the VAC machines have a well established reputation for quality." Prior to his decision, Beck visited Ipex last April to investigate the available options: "We were impressed by several machines from various manufacturers, but the best were on the GAE stand." Although he was careful to evaluate each machine on its merits, Horizon was always the front runner and he continued: "We've run a suction-fed Horizon collator for 20 years, and it's been amazingly reliable, plus we have always had a good relationship with GAE." Beck Print Finishers was formed in 1982 by Kevin Beck's father, Dennis, who has recently retired.
It offers a range of finishing services to printers within the Leicester (UK) area.
