Guillotine Provides Speed For Print Franchise
The need for speed prompted Alphagraphics' Sheffield print franchise to install one of Horizon's APC-61II 61cm fully-automated programmable hydraulic guillotines.
According to Resource's managing director, Phil Thompson, the machine has already made an impact.
He commented: "It's not far short of revolutionary for us.
The main advantage comes from combining several tasks in a single on-line system, which not only speeds up production, it reduces the level of physical labour and, crucially, our outwork costs." And he added: "It cuts the need for pre-folding and pre-trimming altogether.

Paper Counting Machines Join GAE's Systems Range
Graphic Arts Equipment has been awarded the exclusive UK and Ireland distributorship for the Uchida Countron range of paper counting machines.
The quality of the finished book is also excellent every time." The Stitchliner is a saddlestitching system that incorporates flat sheet collating, scoring, folding, stitching and three knife trimming in-line.
Resource Print Solutions is focused on providing a total service to its customers, said GAE.
Rescource's operations director, David Woodcock, explained: "We are a services company, we don't sell specific products, we sell services.
We seek long term relationships with our clients and aim to meet all their print requirements.
In the past this sometimes meant we were more project managers than printers, but now we can produce almost everything in-house and we're developing a sophisticated fulfillment operation." He explained: "For instance, we are managing multi-part mailshots, which include variable data digital products.
Because of the variety of jobs we now take on, we demand versatility from our equipment and the Stitchliner fits that philosophy.
It can produce a wide range of jobs and, if necessary, its various modules can be used independently." The Stitchliner replaces an aging Horizon machine which, according to Thompson, his company had simply outgrown.
He said: "When we bought it, we had a single two colour press.
Now we have two five-colour B2 presses and a range of mono and colour digital machines, plus a large format plotter.
Our old machine just couldn't cope, although it served us well for many years.
Because our digital machines can stitch in-line, the Stitchliner is employed mainly for our litho work, which tends to be the longer runs." Another benefit of the Stitchliner has been a boost in morale at Resource Print Solutions.
Woodcock explained: "Our finishing staff seem to be walking around with smiles on their faces.
They definitely like the machine.
The new Horizon machine frees up their time and allows them to multi-task.
We're more efficient now, there is no question.".
