JDF Binding System Reduces Outsourced Finishing

A Graphic Arts Equipment product story
Edited by the Printingtalk editorial team Nov 7, 2007

Financial market printer Perivan has created an in-house perfect binding facility by buying a single clamp Horizon BQ270jdf system from Graphic Arts Equipment (GAE).

According to GAE, Perivan's investment has resulted in savings in time and money.

Perivan's digital print manager, Matt Lee, said: "We had thousands of pounds worth of perfect binding being outsourced over the year and we looked at the figures and decided we could cover the cost of a system a few times over.

Because of the automation it means you don't need a specialist operator.

It has been in for a few months and is well on its way to paying for itself." The operation's routine work includes AIM flotation documentation, annual and interim reports and mergers and acquisitions information for clients that include many of the UK's leading AIM nominated advisors, investment banks, asset management, insurance and professional services companies, as well as public sector organisations.

More than 10,000 books have already been produced on the JDF/i2i compatible single-clamp autoset perfect binder that has a claimed cycle speed of 500 books per hour and has set-ups controlled by a touch-screen interface.

Perivan also invested in the optional book thickness measuring and input device and high pile delivery unit, which help to increase speed and efficiency still further, added GAE.

Lee added: "The Horizon BQ270jdf gives a really strong bind and the cover creasing and integral nipping produces excellent spine definition.

The main thing is the quality of the work produced and the speed of its completion.

It is giving us the flexibility to manage the work that comes in much better." And he explained: "Previously when we needed perfect binding done we would have to box up the work, send it out, wait for it to be bound and sent back.

We have very tight deadlines so having to outsource it added significantly to our production times.

When we say we are going to deliver something by 8.00am in the morning that is what we have to do.

We can't move the goal posts.

Bringing the process in-house has made everything a lot easier.

The pressure is off us." Lee added: "We already had a Horizon stitch, fold and trim line and we upgraded that last year with an SPF-20A.

We were happy with the way it was installed, it worked well and it was good value all round.

Once it was running we never looked back.

We had been talking to GAE about perfect binders and the company analysed the operation for us to identify the machines that would be most suitable for our work.

I also know the company will not try and sell me something I don't need.".
