MGi Meteor is printer for softbacks

A Graphic Arts Equipment product story
Edited by the Printingtalk editorial team Aug 25, 2008

Digital Book Print, a Milton Keynes-based printing firm, has chosen the Drupa-launched MGi Meteor DP60 to print softback books.

It combines ink fusion and substrate flexibility to give vibrancy of colour and high image definition.

The ink application and fusion control system allows the fine control needed to 'fix' onto various materials, while a 'pre-conditioning' section and modification of the substrate train has increased speed to 3,900 A4 sheets per hour.

By increasing the maximum sheet size an extra row of standard size PVC plastic cards can also be added, giving a 32,000 cards per hour capacity - all in four colours and with full variable data, including images.

It can print on papers from 70 to 350gsm including matt and gloss, and plastics from 100 to 400 microns including PVC, polycarbonate, polyester, Teslin, vinyl and PET.

It also offers runs-of-one with no wastage, and the MGi consumable pack cost structure gives greater control over unit prices.

The DP60 can be adapted to handle plastics- other options include envelope overprinting, cutting and creasing, laminating, varnishing and card punching.

Digital Book Print has also opted for MGi's U-Varnish offline varnishing system, because of its reduced waste compared to a conventional film laminator.

Running at 2,400sph, the U-Varnish can be used for litho and digital print and eliminates curling associated with lamination.

It has a small footprint, uses ozone-free UV lamps, is cheaper than lamination and is more eco-friendly.

Varnishing also eliminates the cross-banding of fuser release oil, which can sometimes be seen on solid areas of digital print.

The MGi Meteor DP60 will be officially launched in the UK at Total Print Expo, with previews at GAE's open house, 9 to 11 September.
