New Products And Glimpse Of Future From Goss
Goss International announced that it will have a major presence at Drupa 2004 in May and will present future concepts to drive print.
Claimed to be capable of speeds up to 90,000 impressions per hour (iph) in straight mode and 45,000iph in collect mode, the PCF-3 folder is designed for press cut-offs between 546mm and 620mm.
The folder operates in straight or collect mode and produces tabloid, delta and double-parallel products with on-the-fly lap adjustment.
Specific design enhancements, including flexible grippers, are said to ensure careful handling of a range of paper types and thicknesses.

One of the largest magazine and catalogue printers in North America has ordered two new gapless web presses and three finishing systems from Goss International.
Christopher Clement, Goss International's senior product manager, said: "This folder has been designed specifically to provide the smoothest possible path for ensuring the highest quality final product.
By eliminating abrupt handling as signatures pass through the folder, we have minimised the risk of defects and marking that can commonly occur during the folding process." The combination of proprietary Goss innovations, such as double-cut technology, the diverter and the new slow-down mechanism, is claimed by the company to provide increased control of signatures, greater folding flexibility and quality on each book delivered, according to Clement.
Double-cut technology is claimed to improve signature control, eliminate defects and reduce sensitivity to pagination, paper weight and ink coverage variations.
In the two-step signature creation process, a combined nip and knife roller perforates the ribbon.
Tapes aligned with the perforations then grip the ribbon, whilst a second roller completes the separation of the signature by cutting the non-perforated areas.
Making the cut in two steps eliminates the throw-and-catch effect inherent with a single-cut system and instead provides positive control of the paper throughout the conversion of the ribbon in to individual signatures, without the need for tackers or static on the ribbons, claimed Goss.
The Goss PCF-3 dynamic diverter is said to prevent violent movement from damaging printed products through the upper and lower tabloid, or upper and lower quarterfolder.
The diverter features two elliptical devices that divert the consecutive signatures smoothly and carefully on two separate paths at a constant, controlled speed regardless of the paper stock or product.
The patented vacuum slow-down system is also said to provide linear deceleration of products on the belt before they reach the post-press area.
Reducing speed by 45 per cent prevents the damage and marking often caused by more abrupt delivery.
Even at press speeds in excess of 80,000 copies an hour, the slow-down mechanism enables a precise and constant head-to-tail spacing in the shingled stream of books and products, added the company.
The PCF-3 folder is claimed to allow delta folds to be run without internal lapping, optimising product dimension, reducing paper waste and preventing paper thickness disrupting the stacking of paper signatures.
Additional features include fully-automatic or semi-automatic fold change-over for flexibility and protecting against paper jams, symmetrical rubber to rubber pinch rolls for tension control, dual magazine delivery in collect mode and dual stripper chains and lateral fan adjustment on deliveries.
The company added that the folder is also distinguished by a modular design, tape cylinders with cantilevered structure and self-adjusting, pre-spliced tapes (belts).
Those features allow tapes to be replaced quickly and easily, reducing press downtime and saving valuable operator time.
Clement added: "Pinless folders have already established a justified reputation for unbeatable versatility and paper-savings.
With the PCF-3, Goss International has honed the design to provide even greater production efficiency through built-in quality control and user-friendly features.
The result is a folder that is unmatched in its class today.".
