One of North America''s largest media companies will use web offset technology from Goss International to create a non-stop print manufacturing system in St Petersburg, Florida (USA).

One of North America''s largest media companies will use web offset technology from Goss International to create a non-stop print manufacturing system at a new facility in St Petersburg, Florida (USA) Cox Target Media is now installing two eight-unit Sunday 4000 press systems with automatic transfer technology to produce its Valpak direct marketing products

Jim Sampey, executive vice president for operations for Cox Target Media, said: "We plan to run the AT presses around the clock, without stopping for make-readies and we will do four-colour job changes every 12 minutes.

Goss International is helping us create a highly automated manufacturing system where the print component is part of an integrated, continuous workflow process." Cox Target Media is aiming to more than double the 20 billion targeted direct mail coupons it now prints annually for the national Valpak programme.

The effort will depend on a workflow that turns rolls of paper in to sealed coupon-filled envelopes without hands touching the product.

Integration of technology from many vendors will be a key to the success of the new Valpak Manufacturing Centre.

According to Sampey: "We are calling on our partners to collaborate closely with each other and with us.

Goss International is the only press manufacturer that had the technology, infrastructure and vision to step up to this type of challenge." Sampey said that direct mail coupons have a proven track record as an advertising medium and he added: "We are going to be able to add even more value for our advertisers by being able to target coupons to each group of 10,000 households." Goss International's chief executive officer, Bob Brown, commented: "We are excited about working with one of the world's leading media companies to realise this visionary concept.

This project will demonstrate emphatically how innovation can continue to bring more value and opportunity to print media." The Sunday 4000 presses at Cox Target Media will include fully automated roll handling, pre-setting, closed-loop control, plate changing and data reporting.

Goss automatic transfer technology will automatically take four printing units off-impression and bring the other four units on-impression, allowing on-the-run four-colour job change-overs.

The double-circumference presses will print as many as 88 coupons per cylinder revolution, said Goss.

Installation of the Sunday 4000 systems with Goss Contiweb FD pasters and Ecocool dryers began in September.

The Valpak franchise network sells coupons to 60,000 restaurants, retailers and other clients throughout America.

The coupons are printed centrally at the Cox Target Media facility, packaged in blue envelopes and mailed to households nationwide.

The Goss presses will not be the only systems at the new 10-acre facility now under construction in St Petersburg.

Signature handling will be totally automated.

A finishing system will convert the printed paper web traveling at 2,500 feet per minute in to cut and collated coupons.

Robotic cranes running on monorails will then place the coupons in an eight-story storage system, pick the correct coupon batches from storage, assemble the envelopes around the coupons and deliver the finished products on to mail trays.
