Aiming for premium quality in print as well as pizzas, Papa John's International has installed a new Goss Sunday 2000 web press.

Aiming for premium quality in print as well as pizzas, Papa John's International has installed a new Goss Sunday 2000 web press The press has been installed at Preferred Marketing Solutions, Papa John's growing commercial printing division in Louisville, Kentucky (USA)

The third largest pizza company in the world will use the new gapless, four-unit press to print menus, box toppers, free-standing advertising inserts and other marketing materials for almost 3,000 Papa John's restaurants, as well as outside customers.

Goss International shipped the press from its factory in New Hampshire and completed the installation in June.

Ted Hagler, director of manufacturing and quality assurance for Preferred Marketing Solutions, said: "We've added the Sunday press because the same principles driving our pizza business are driving our commercial web business - product quality, service and price.

Goss International has provided advanced technology that will allow us to increase quality, productivity and efficiency whilst cutting down job turn-around times for our customers." The Goss Sunday 2000 press at Preferred Marketing Solutions is equipped with an Ecocool dryer, in-line finishing capabilities and a sheeter to produce direct mail products and free-standing inserts.

"This system doubles our current productivity speeds and triples our overall capacity," Hagler commented.

Papa John's established its in-house Preferred Marketing Solutions, in the mid-1990s to reduce costs and gain greater control of its considerable print volume.

The division has grown consistently at 20 per cent -22 per cent per year-over-year the past five years.

Printing for outside customers has grown from 10 per cent to 40 per cent of overall volume and Hagler predicts that figure will jump to 50 per cent in 2007.

Hagler explained: "Our franchisees are not required to buy their printing from us.

The new press system gives us a clear advantage in competing to earn their business and the business of outside customers." Founded in 1984 and based in Louisville, Kentucky, Papa John's now has almost 3,000 restaurants in 49 US states and in 23 countries.

Seventy-five per cent of the restaurants are independently owned franchises.

The printing division provides complete pre-press, sheetfed, web offset and bindery capabilities, as well as in-house postal handling and direct mail services.
