One of the largest magazine and catalogue printers in North America has ordered two new gapless web presses and three finishing systems from Goss International.
Printing towers with both four pages and five pages across the printing cylinder will provide heatset or coldset operation as well as mixed heatset and coldset products for editorial convenience and advertising quality.
Alan Lambert, plant manager for the new Independent News and Media print site, commented: "We are working closely with Goss to make this the most productive newspaper and news magazine printing plant in Europe." The second Goss FPS, and the first in mainland Europe, also highlights innovation in business approach and technology applications, according to the company.
FD Hoesktra Boom's press specification called for both press units and folder to be prepared for potential changeable cut-off, as well as its new press hall being designed to allow for future expansion and changing requirements.
Jaap Hoekstra, chief executive officer of Hoekstra Boom, said: "We want to be best positioned to be able to seize new opportunities and explore unanticipated avenues in the future.
This is one of the key advantages provided by the Flexible Printing System." For the New York Times, Goss International will supply a 12-tower Colorliner press system, as well as a press enhancement programme.
The combination order of a 12-tower latest generation Colorliner press - including many technologies featured on the Goss FPS press - and web-width reduction on the five existing Colorliner presses reflects a vision shared between The New York Times and Goss.
Goss said that the two companies share a view of how new technology, ideas and enhancements can continuously improve the impact and value of printed newspapers.
Goss International also said that it continues its leadership in single-width press technology with the latest Magnum presses.
The new four-page 560mm cut-off press for Agderposten Trykk in Norway, will comprise nine footprint shaftless Goss Magnum four-high towers, nine reelstands and three Goss N-40 folders, all with quarterfold.
Nils Gauslaa, the managing director of Agderposten Trykk, said: "This is extremely important for the newspaper sector in Norway where price pressure has increased substantially in recent years.
The added flexibility of the configuration will also increase our production capacity, enabling us to produce a variety of different products." Two new Goss Universal 75 presses with a 70cm cut-off and 100 per cent heatset capability have been chosen by Sodimco in Belgium to produce a new newspaper format.
Those features in the single-width two-around presses will enable production of a 64-page, 100 per cent heatset newspaper product from each press in the new 35cm x 25cm format.
Furthermore, the two presses will be installed duplex enabling a maximum 128 pages when all four printed webs are sent to one folder.
Not the only new departure for the customer, the installation will also allow Sodimco tighter control of its work through bringing the majority in-house.
According to Bob Brown, chief executive officer of Goss International, the illustrations of growing success to be highlighted at Ifra Expo are not isolated examples.
He said: "A company can say a lot about its products and services.
What really counts is what its customers are saying.
With increasing frequency and clarity, leading publishers and printers around the world are saying they trust in our innovation, infrastructure and execution.
They are saying it with their investment decisions and with the progressive rationale behind those decisions.
As competition intensifies, this will continue to define the most successful publishers and printers and differentiate Goss International.".
