Venezuelan newspaper El Informador has invested in a new 20-unit Goss Community SSC press for its facility in Barquisimeto.
Goss said that El Informador is set to gain a range of benefits, including a rise in capacity and a reduction in paper waste.
An increase in colour pagination will additionally help the newspaper meet the demands of its advertisers.
As one of the first newspapers in the country to print in colour, El Informador has always invested in technological innovations to meet the growing demands of its readers, added Goss.
The new Community SSC press will consist of five four-high towers and will be supplied with five zero-speed splicers and a folder with upper former.
With a 21.5 inch (546mm) cut-off, the company is expecting a 10 per cent reduction in paper consumption.
Mauricio Gomez Sigala, owner of El Informador, explained the reasons for choosing the Goss press: "As one of the newspapers with the highest circulations in the mid-western area of Venezuela, we have chosen to invest in the Community SSC press as it offers us the versatility for printing colour newspapers and semi-commercial products.
Apart from being easy to use, it will enable us to improve quality and increase our productivity." Gomez Sigala predicted that the technological advances his company will gain by installing the new press will provide a more versatile, easy to maintain and user-friendly press and the levels of productivity, quality and reliability that are now required.
"We estimate an installed capacity rise of around 190 per cent, thanks mainly to the new printing speed.
Colour pagination will increase by a minimum of 60 per cent and we aim to reduce our current paper waste levels by 50 per cent with the use of automatic splicers," he confirmed.
The investment in the Community SSC press was partly in response to developing trends in the newspaper advertising market, commented Goss.
Gomez Sigala explained: "Over the past few years, the advertising market has become more demanding in terms of originality and creativity, with colour integral to design.
In order to meet these demands we needed to invest in new equipment and this press, with its technological upgrades, more than fulfills our requirements." Established in 1968, El Informador today produces over 45,000 copies of its newspaper from Monday to Saturday, with circulation of the Sunday edition reaching over 50,000 copies.
The company is currently printing an average of three sections per issue of 12 standard pages each, with cover and back pages in colour, along with two internal pages in colour.
That is set to increase with the installation of the new press, as El Informador sets its sights on new markets in the near future.
Sigala elaborated: "The use of towers that allow for colour impressions on both sides of the web will bring us new commercial opportunities, especially in the insert market, which we currently do not serve very well." Julio Gostisa, sales manger for South America at Goss International commented: "The emphasis in South America is currently on increased technological development and better productivity.
El Informador has thought carefully and thoroughly investigated the options available to them.
They have chosen a press that will provide modularity and flexibility for the future.".
