World First Printing System For Irish Paper
Independent News and Media will install the world's first Goss Flexible Printing System (FPS) press in Northern Ireland.
The FPS press at The Free Lance-Star will feature a 72-inch (1,830mm) web width, two 2:5:5 jaw folders and four Contiweb FD pasters.
The press will produce, in full-colour, 48-page broadsheet products running straight, 96-page broadsheet products running collect and semi-commercial products with ribbon widths up to 36" (915mm).
The newspaper will equip the Magnapak packaging system for polywrapping as well as inserting.
Goss will install its Omnizone supervisory controls, as well as Ferag press gripper and winding and unwinding storage components as part of the system.
Goss International represents Ferag products in the USA.
The Goss FPS press is claimed to print at up to 90,000 copies per hour with features that include independent inker units that slide apart on rails from the plate and blanket cylinder section, which simplifies current, or future cut-off change possibilities.
The tower design is also claimed to improve print quality, whilst reducing building height requirements.
John Jenkins, operations director at The Free Lance-Star, said the paper has considered the heatset option since selecting the FPS press for newspaper and commercial printing.
He explained: "Adding a dryer makes a very versatile press even more versatile and will allow us to deliver higher print quality and more product options to our readers, advertisers and contract print partners." The first Goss FPS press, including two heatset towers, is now in production at Independent News and Media in Newry, Northern Ireland.
