An HP Indigo press 1050 has been installed at Cambrian Printers in Aberystwyth, mid-Wales as part of the company's drive to increase its turnover and establish digital printing as 10 per cent of its revenue.

Cambrian, a family owned business established in 1860 as a newspaper publisher and printer, with 80 employees, offers a full one-stop printing service, from design through to finishing.

The new four-colour HP Indigo press 1050 joins an existing mono digital press to provide short and long run personalised and variable data colour print, as well as proofs and products for market testing.

Its new HP Indigo press 1050 will allow commercial brochures, academic journals and high quality catalogues to be printed digitally, reducing turn-around times, printing costs and waste.

By investing in new equipment and improved colour management, Cambrian has reduced the amount of paper used per job by 20 per cent.

The fast turn-around times and cost-effective production of the HP Indigo press 1050 is also helping to meet the company's targets for 2005, including reducing landfill waste by 20 per cent, CO2 emissions by two per cent and alcohol emissions by 50 per cent.

Carrick Wilkie, sales development director at Cambrian Printers, said: "There was a demand from existing customers for digital colour work and instead of outsourcing this it made sense to keep it in-house and develop our digital services.

We sent blind print samples from various digital presses to our customers and asked them to select the print quality acceptable to them - the HP Indigo press 1050 came out on top." Green Books, a new customer, wanted an environmentally friendly printer to print a new book on to 100 per cent recycled paper.

Cambrian used its HP Indigo press 1050 to produce the required 100 copies and with no waste or printing plates, it made the production of the book even more environmentally friendly.

Cambrian Printers has amalgamated its new digital press with its existing litho business and is using the press to print test brochures on a short run.

"Using our HP Indigo press 1050 we print short test-runs for brochures.

We can then print very long runs using traditional printing methods or shorter runs using the Indigo press 1050.

The press has proved to be an invaluable tool for new and existing customers," said Carrick.

Cambrian Printers is also using the Indigo 1050 for supplying high-resolution proofs with a much more accurate match to the final printed product.

Production and turn-around times have improved as PDFs are sent directly to the digital press.

The business is ISO14001 accredited and the first and only company in Wales to achieve Green Dragon Level 5, the highest environmental accreditation in the UK.

The company has a history of investing in new technology and was among the first to use photo typesetting and liquid polymer plate conversion of the newspaper press.

Today, all its processes are controlled through its quality standards and the addition of its HP Indigo press 1050 further demonstrates its commitment to that, it believes.

The HP Indigo press 1050 is said to offer high quality digital print and variable data functions for entry-level printing and prints up to 2,000 A4 full-colour or 8,000 single-colour images an hour.

Its high resolution and additional six-colour capabilities, including spot and fluorescent colours, and the ability to print on a wide range of substrates of different weights and materials, makes it suitable for printers wanting to penetrate the digital print market said HP.
