HP yesterday launched the new Designjet Z3100ps GP photo printer, which is claimed to expand the recently introduced HP Designjet Z printer series portfolio in to the publishing environment The Designjet Z3100ps is claimed to simplify the process of integrating printers in to a designers' workflow

HP added that the Designjet Z3100ps GP features HP's Dreamcolor technology, a certified system of colour technologies and sciences, which is said to make it easy to produce accurate, predictable and consistent colour across a series of digital colour devices.

With the new Designjet Z Series model, graphic design houses, advertising firms, pre-press operations and even print service providers can produce predictable and consistent colour across a series of digital colour devices easier than ever before, claimed HP.

The new embedded Adobe PS3/PDF RIP is claimed to enable designers, publishers and commercial printers to work with the files they receive, eliminating the need to dedicate a specific computer just for the RIP software and compressing files.

With the addition of the HP's Advanced Profiling system with monitor calibrator, graphics personnel can experiment on a range of media and know that the colours they see on the monitor will be exactly what will be printed out, added HP.

Enrique Lores, vice president and general manager of the Inkjet Commercial Division at HP, said: "Disjointed workflows and tedious colour management have long been pain-points for many people in the creative market.

Since the introduction of the HP Designjet Z Photo Printer series last autumn, HP has demonstrated its commitment to simplifying the workflow for creative professionals by offering enabling innovations like the embedded spectrophotometer." He explained: "With the new Designjet Z3100ps GP, graphic artists, advertising agencies, pre-press establishments and print service providers can quickly turn-around stand out prints, keeping the business and creative process moving." HP said that users can benefit from colour management tools and features that come with the HP Advanced Profiling system.

The built-in spectrophotometer, powered by X-Rite i1 colour technology, is claimed to simplify accurate colour-matching, enabling automated ICC profiling so users can create custom colour profiles in a few minutes rather than a number of hours.

They can also expect exact colour matches throughout the printing process.

As a result, vibrant colour mock-ups and proofs up to 24" and 44" (610mm and 1,118mm) wide can be repeatedly produced, added the company.

Creative personnel can produce accurate colours on the first attempt with the free HP Proprint plug-in for Adobe Photoshop, claimed the company.

The plug-in is compatible with all HP Designjet Z photo printers and has been developed for Adobe Photoshop CS2.

It automatically synchronises application and driver settings with a simplified user interface so that printing time is saved to increase productivity.

Alan Roche, colour consultant at Pixel CMS, commented: "The HP Designjet Z3100 photo printer series is a major step forward for pre-press production thanks to the complete colour for pre-press standards, such as GRACOL or SWOP.

It is also the first embedded spectrophotometer for best-in-class colour accuracy and consistency.

In addition, the system enables complete colour management in an easy and comprehensive way through the innovative HP Colour Centre." The HP Designjet Z3100ps GP also uses the 12-ink HP Vivera pigment ink system to create a rich colour gamut and produce vibrant colours for museum-quality prints that resist fading for more than 200 years on a range of HP media, it is claimed.

Additionally, the HP 70 Gloss Enhancer and HP Quad black ink set creates mono prints and achieves truly neutral greys under different lighting conditions, added the company.

The Gloss Enhancer and blacks also provide continuous tones, uniform gloss and rich blacks, making the HP Designjet Z3100ps GP suitablel for high-quality proofing applications, in addition to fine art reproductions and photographs.

HP's range media also offers more than 30 options, including photo, fine art, proofing, canvas, as well as bond, coated, vinyl, scrim and banner media options.

Updated for workgroups, the Designjet Z3100ps GP's embedded web server offers various functions, such as job submissions and queue management, for better productivity.

The robust system lets multiple users submit print jobs and the increased storage (256Mb queue and 10Gb memory) allows for permanent storage of files, so jobs can be revisited, added HP.

HP believes that design houses, advertising agencies, publishers and print service providers will find the workflow is streamlined, giving them more time to focus on creating prints and meeting deadlines.

The Designjet Z3100ps GP 24-inch model and 44-inch model, as well as the HP Proprint plug-in for Adobe Photoshop are expected to be available from April 23.
