Replacing a two-colour litho press an HP Indigo press 1050 is printing menus, schedules, welcome packs and the a newspaper on board the cruise ship, Ocean Village Two.

The HP Indigo 1050 digital press was installed by the Digital People and it is said it will provide greater flexibility and enable a wider range of material to be printed than before The press was installed in Germany whilst the ship was docked, with Digital People having to overcome a range of challenges to set-up the press

The press is predominantly used in port but it has also been operated at sea on occasions, with no deterioration in print quality.

During the press's first week on board it was used to print over 100,000 impressions.

According to HP, due to the high standard of printing, the press will be used for more passenger-facing work.

The press is currently used to print 800 daily newspapers but Ocean Village hopes to develop a greeting card and post card service.

Chris Blanchard, business development manager at Digital People, said: "The installation of the press on-board the Ocean Village Two proved to be a significant and unprecedented challenge for us.

The press had to be dismantled on land to fit through the one-metre wide ship doors and then reconstructed inside the ship's pressroom.

To ensure that the printing system worked effectively we also had to consider the variable power supply of the ship.

Digital People liaised with HP Indigo engineers in Israel to overcome this problem and to ensure that the press could operate efficiently with a suitable voltage stabiliser on-board the ship." Paul Wright, Ocean Village's entertainment and revenue development manager, commented: "The installation was a challenge but Digital People was brilliant.

The company worked really closely with our staff and provided us with total peace of mind.

The HP Indigo press 1050 is the first digital press to be installed on an Ocean Village cruise ship, so it was important that everything went smoothly." He continued: "We are very impressed with the digital press.

It is easy to use, cost-effective and has the capacity to produce high-quality, double-sided, full colour print at high speed, as there is no drying time.

The Indigo press 1050 is able to colour match the Ocean Village logo perfectly and we are able to produce impromptu collateral on-board.".
