HP's new Designjet L65500, 104-inch digital printer, which has been introduced at Drupa 2008, is the first printer to feature HP's latex printing technologies.

Those systems include HP's Latex Inks and Wide Scan Printing Technology The Designjet L65500 is claimed to be a versatile print system that can produce a range of range of work on a variety of materials, including most low-cost, uncoated, solvent compatible substrates, from point-of-purchase displays, transit signage, wall murals and exhibition graphics to vehicle graphics and fleet marking

It is also said to be suitable for producing exterior and interior event signage.

HP said that together, its Latex Printing Technologies provide durable, odourless prints, sharp and vivid image quality, application versatility and high-productivity.

Those benefits will enable print service providers to increase their capacity and grow their businesses, whilst reducing the impact of printing on the environment.

New water-based HP Latex Inks provide many of the benefits of solvent-ink technology without imposing typical environmental, health and safety considerations, added HP.

Odourless prints produced with HP Latex Inks emit extremely low levels of volatile organic compounds (VOCs), it is claimed.

No special ventilation is required, facilitating an improved printing environment and Latex Inks are not classified as hazardous waste and are non-flammable and non-combustible.

The Designjet L65500 printer, HP's large-format media and its Latex Inks are designed and tested together to provide optimal results with every print, it is claimed.

HP designed 14 new large-format media, including five recyclable substrates, for optimal results with Latex Printing Technologies.

Further to that, a proprietary new HP media surface-treatment technology, which was developed together with the Designjet L65500, is said to produce a wide colour gamut and makes it possible to achieve durability and sharp, vivid image quality on materials that do not typically print well with solvent inks.

Also on the HP stand at Drupa 2008 in hall 8A, is HP's Wide Scan Printing Technology for claimed high productivity and high image quality using two proprietary HP technologies working together - Wide Scan Printheads and the Optical Media Advance Sensor (OMAS).

The Designjet L65500 with Wide Scan Printheads to enable consistent output at 800 square feet per hour for outdoor prints and 400 square feet per hour for indoor output.

For integration with customers' workflows, HP said it is working with software RIP vendors to develop systems for the Designjet L65500, including Caldera Graphics, Colorgate, Ergosoft, ONYX Graphics, Wasatch, AIT and SA International.

Additionally HP is to launch a registered developer programme intended to ensure adopters of the company's Latex Printing Technologies will have the ability to select from substrates suitable for current and future applications.

Santi Morera, vice president and general manager of large format printing commercial solutions for HP's Imaging and Printing Group, said: "From our perspective, environmental matters are growing in importance and we want to make sure that we are providing the best systems for our customers and the environment.

The Designjet L65500 with HP Latex Inks offers print service providers a compelling new alternative that will allow them to expand the variety of outdoor and indoor applications they can offer to environmentally conscious customers, whilst also improving their overall printing atmosphere.".
