A Hewlett-Packard product story

Work produced by Amberley Labels, a digitally printed labels converter, on a Hewlett-Packard (HP) Indigo WS4050 press was recognised at the 2009 Finat Awards.

Amberley won a Finat award for a 'no-label-look' label for Fortnum and Mason's Still Blenheim Palace natural mineral water; the company received the prize in the Marketing and End-Use Applications category at the event.

Graham Backhouse, sales and marketing director of Amberley Labels, said: 'This label was very complex to produce as it involved printing identical images back to back on a clear film substrate.

'We had to use our digital technology to its full capabilities, printing the first image, followed by a white backing layer, then the second image in very tight register so that images lined up perfectly.

'The HP Indigo press was able to reproduce all the fine details and accurately replicate the colours required to create a highly attractive label with a striking shelf presence - exactly what Fortnum and Mason required,' he added.

Amberley Labels has also just installed an HP Indigo WS6000 digital press to provide additional production capacity.

The Indigo WS6000 is claimed to be able to run at speeds of up to 30m/min and to print up to 300,000 linear metres per month.

Amberley plans to use the increased capabilities of its new press to encourage more customers with medium-run jobs to consider migrating work from conventional print processes to digital production.

'Buying our HP Indigo WS6000 digital press and our new Digicon finishing equipment has doubled our digital print capacity, ensuring that we can respond faster to our customers' requests, with maximum flexibility,' said Backhouse.

Amberley's customers include a variety of companies in the cosmetics, toiletries, healthcare and specialist food markets.

In 2003, Amberley began producing digitally printed labels using HP Indigo technology.

Since 2005, the company has operated an Indigo WS4050 and an Indigo WS4000, which was upgraded for the new Indigo WS6000.
