Worcester Trade Print is moving to a new 6,000 square foot factory in Redditch and re-branding itself as the WTP Group The company which has produced greetings cards for 25 years is adapting to changed market conditions, to greater competition from the Far East coupled with a change from an average print run of 150,000 five years ago to 1,500 which is the reason behind its decision to invest in a Quickmaster DI from Heidelberg UK

Managing director Mark Eastwood said: "Traditionally we have printed litho and we are not turning our back on that.

We may extend our CTP and conventional press line up in future but Direct Imaging was the right addition for the market as it stands now.

We looked at other DI options but liked the feeder and sidelay on the Quickmaster DI.

It is important to us because we sometimes need to apply a fifth colour and accurate register counts." The company did not consider digital because it is focusing on runs of 500 to 5,000 where the DI is ideal and it likes the waterless litho quality the press gives.

Service with Heidelberg is readily available and that, too, influenced its decision.

The new press will have full production transferred to it by the end of March 2004.

WTP Group has a full range of greetings card finishing options including, cutting and creasing, folding, embossing, foil blocking, die-cutting and inserting.

It has six platens, including two in 82 format.

The DI may also win the company more general commercial work alongside its greetings card niche.

All but one of its 16 staff has opted to make the 20-mile transfer with the company.

From its new base it hopes to extend its turnover of ?800,000-?900,000.

The company will consider at some point extending finishing operations to a continental shift pattern to match the pressroom and meet the increased throughput this press will give.
