Midway Colour Print believes a switch from a two-and-a-half year old Heidelberg Speedmaster SM74-4 to a new CD74-5L press will give it a 25% lift in throughput The company believes it will do so by eliminating work that has needed two passes for coating and the increased mechanical speed of the press, at 15,000 sheets per hour (sph) rather than 13,000sph

Managing director Peter Oatley said the investment reflects the Bath (UK) company's changed market needs in the three years since he joined.
"A decision to buy a CD102-5L and SM74-4 seemed right in 2001 but today the market demands coating and 40% of our throughput on the new press will use five colours.
We have been very pleased with the CD102 and believe by replicating this at B2 format we can increase our workload across a wide range of stocks," he said.
The company already attributes ?750,000 of its ?4.3m turnover to cartons and it can see this sector increasing to a third of its sales over time although its main core business will remain high quality commercial work for a regional customer base.
With the press investment comes an investment in sales with an additional experienced recruit being taken on to cover the M4 corridor.
"In just three years Midway Colour has increased sales from ?3m to ?4.3m and this rate of growth will continue over the next year with the CD74-5L coming on stream in July 2004.
There are a lot of commercial printers out there so you have to invest and push ahead of your rivals or fall down," said Oatley.
The press will operate on Continental shifts to give 24 hour, six-day production.
