However it is constantly evolving as new functionality is added to reflect the changing needs of both new and existing customers.
By creating a full JDF workflow, the Alden Group believes it will enhance its efficiency and effectiveness in production, safeguarding its reputation for excellent service.
Now that connections have been agreed with Heidelberg, the group hopes that it can implement the links over the coming year with completion in 2005.
The group will take delivery of the Prinect Printready software next month.
This will be followed by a Ti52 B2 buckle folder in October, a Stitchmaster ST400 saddle-stitcher with six stations and a cover feeder in November and two of Heidelberg's new KD82 combination folders with stacker bundlers in December.
Development of the JDF workflow will run alongside the introduction of this new equipment.
Operations manager Craig Harry said: "The folders replace pile feeding machines but we will now run bundles because it is quicker and this will create more factory space.
Combination is right for the most of the journal and book work we do but the B2 buckle folder will handle odd sections and promotional work." The ST400-6 replaces a Muller Martini.
"There has been a steep increase in gather-stitch-trim work with new contracts secured and we want to handle that higher volume in house.
Investing in the latest equipment is a key commitment of the Alden Group, and in this case it expands our capacity as well as allowing us to exploit the new JDF technology," added Harry.
