The outcome is that Lamport Gilbert will continue to specialise in B1 and Blackmore in cold-set web and B2 colour printing, with both sales teams offering a large range of products across the group.
That would allow the production resource to cross calibrate in all departments, to help ensure a strong disaster recovery profile which is needed in the market place in which the company operates.
Lamport Gilbert, based a mile from the M4 at Reading (UK), has ordered a Heidelberg Speedmaster CD102-5LX to replace a Speedmaster 102 Classic four-colour.
It will retain its SM102-5PL with coater.
The new press will be delivered in September.
Charles Day, the newly appointed sales director for Lamport Gilbert, said: "We decided on the future product range we wanted to offer after consultation with our clients.
We were open minded on the number of units and press type, so we called in the manufacturers to discuss our needs.
We assessed with our management teams our strengths and weaknesses as a business and where we wanted to be in five and 10 years across the group." He said that the company considered a number of press manufacturers' products.
"When we looked closely at our customer base and type of business it led us to the flexibility of the CD102-5LX with its pre-press interface for closed loop pre-press to press connectivity and Axis Control spectrophotometry.
These are regarded as key quality uplifts, giving our customers the opportunity for a more precise and consistent end product." Day added that the company had specified coating for two reasons.
Firstly, there are several customers who preferred coating to a varnish or lamination.
Coating also means it could give customers a faster turnaround for flexibility of service.
The company has CTP in place which would easily cope with the higher volume of plates needed for the more productive and automated press.
The company intends to review its finishing equipment during 2005.
Lamport Gilbert operates six days-a-week, 24 hours-a-day, handling a broad range of work for many large multinational companies.
