The UK's largest independent printer offshore Bridson and Horrox, a specialist in financial printing based in the Isle of Man, has installed a Heidelberg Speedmaster CD74-5LX Having invested in a new pre-press system the company wanted to print to European ISO quality standards, to close the colour loop so that data could flow seamlessly between pre-press and press

That would fulfil the need to produce proofs that are representative of the printed product and vice versa, measured to pre-determined standards.

To do that the company knew that it needed Imagecontrol, meaning a move from densitometry to spectrophotometry, which is a more accurate colour measurement.

Imagecontrol measures colour, including hue, across the whole sheet and at Bridson and Horrox it is being used on the new five-colour press - which is a B2 five-colour machine with coater and extended delivery -and the company's existing six-colour B2 Speedmaster.

"The CD74-5LX replaces a six-colour SM74.

We are able to use one less colour because we feel we can print better solids on the CD with its better rolling power.

We are now able to handle a broader range of stocks and are currently producing a weekly magazine using a part mechanical 80gsm paper.

Coating is a standard requirement for us because of the focus on short run, fast turnround financial work.

Most business is in and out of the factory within 48 hours or 72 hours.

Our customers benefit because they receive quality work without fear of marking," said a Bridson and Horrox spokesperson.

Most of its work is from offshore subsidiaries of clearing banks and other financial specialists.

It handles a range of jobs for these companies, including magazines, and it has added a pile turner alongside the press to help create good well-presented sections quickly and easily.

Bridson and Horrox works a mix of double day and 24-hour work patterns, depending on work volumes.

It remains a family business, based in Douglas.
