The company unveiled a prototype at its 'Postpress-Inforum' in Leipzig to give customers from all over the world the opportunity to witness the performance of the system.

The automated system is claimed to be able to produce up to 4,000 books an hour.

Motorised format adjustment is performed in the gathering station using the signature height, thus ensuring rapid job and format changes and ease of operation.

Automatic job pre-setting is derived from the previous production steps by means of the JDF data transfer (JDF = Job Definition Format).

The production data can also be recorded for actual job costing.

The user operates the system using the tried-and-tested Heidelberg user interface, which is ergonomic and features self-explanatory icons said the company.

A choice can be made between various glue types such as hot melt or polyurethane.

The range of applications will be expanded and additional services can be offered.

The polyurethane technology enables fast and cost-effective production of high-quality brochures and books said Heidelberg.

Overall, the new perfect binder generation features short make-ready times, easy operation and low space requirement.

The target groups for the Eurobind 4000 system are industrial bookbinders and full-service printshops with an annual volume of approximately two million copies of perfect-bound brochures and average run sizes of 5000 copies added the company.

"The Eurobind 4000 system is designed to ensure cost-effective and high-quality production on today's print markets where the majority of jobs are small and involve frequent changes," states Stephan Plenz, head of post-press at Heidelberg.

The system will be available for delivery from the middle of 2005.
