So, instead of 'higher, faster and further' being the parameters by which athletes measure success, the key factors during the competition will be 'fast inking-up' and producing 'as little waste as possible', said Heidelberg.
The company commented that as a result of the competition, printing is taking on the guise of a sporting discipline and by being included for the first time on a demonstration basis at the 38th World Skills Competition in Helsinki.
Young printers from Belgium, Germany, Finland, the Netherlands, Norway, Sweden and Switzerland will compete for gold, silver and bronze medals and, as one of the sponsors of the event, Heidelberge is providing the equipment with which the printers will work.
The printers will be using one of four Printmaster PM 52-4 presses for their print jobs and there will also be two Polar cutters available.
Details of the print job will only be released to the competitors immediately before the event.
The organisers in Finland expect around 800 young people from a total of 39 countries to put their skills to the test in 45 different professions.
Heidelberg said it is keen to be part of the demonstration competition.
Dr Walter Stahlin, whose responsibilities at Heidelberg include European sales, stressed the company's commitment, by commenting: "We've made training an important task in all areas of the graphic arts industry, in particular for the new generation of printers.".
