The 100th Cutstar sheeter sold by Heidelberg has been bought by Eclipse Colour Printing in Kettering (UK).

The 100th Cutstar sheeter sold by Heidelberg has been bought by Eclipse Colour Printing in Kettering (UK) It will be used with a Heidelberg Speedmaster SM 102-12P press and is already the fourth Cutstar to be installed at the company with a Speedmaster SM 102

According to Eclipse managing director Simon Moore: "The Cutstar has further reduced the gap between web presses and large perfecting presses.

The market for small web offset presses has kept on shrinking and sheetfed printing is now at the bottom end of the 16-page web market.

A big advantage of the Cutstar concept is the fact that cut-off lengths can be varied to suit the relevant print product.

That saves a great deal of material, enabling sheetfed printing to compete with web printing for certain jobs with higher runs." Eclipse works for top companies all over Britain, either directly or with print management service providers.

As only a limited number of paper types are processed, mostly silk matt and gloss paper from 115gsm to 130gsm, many of its jobs are suitable for web printing because only a relatively small number of reel changes are required.

Lighter grammages can also be processed.

Moore continued: "We wouldn't invest in a large perfecting press without Cutstar now.

The investment pays for itself within a relatively short period and we incorporate it in our depreciation and renewal strategy.

We replace our presses before they reach 100 million prints.

That means we have no problem selling them on and we benefit from reliability and state-of-the-art technology." According to Matthias Sieringhaus, Heidelberg product manager for the 70 x 100 format: "The Cutstar combines several advantages - it cuts paper costs because reel stock is less expensive than sheet stock and the variable cut-off length results in optimum use.

It cuts production costs too because it increases the utilisation levels of Speedmaster presses.

There are further benefits relating to the storage area required for reels and printing with single-web paper is also possible." The Cutstar is claimed to enable users to process reel stock on the Heidelberg Speedmaster SM or CD 102, Speedmaster XL 105 and Speedmaster CD 74 presses.

The web is fed to the cutting unit via a buffer and an infeed roller and cut to the required cut-off format, anywhere between 40cm and the maximum sheet cut-off length of the press.

Once the cutting process is finished, the sheet is guided to the shingling unit.

Here, the rear edge of the sheet is lifted so that the following sheet can enter in to the free gap.

The stream of shingled stock produced in that way is then passed to the feeder.

Paper from 50gsm to 300gsm and foil are suitable for use as printing stock.

Heidelberg launched the Cutstar at Drupa 2000.

Since then, the company has sold 100 sheeters and sales figures have recently shown a particularly healthy increase, said the company.

UK customers account for around one quarter of those sales.

Eighty per cent of Cutstar units worldwide are installed with long perfecting presses, a product Heidelberg obtains from Bielomatik Leuze in Neuffen (Germany).
