With its long perfecting presses in 35cm x 50cm (13.78" x 19.68") format, Heidelberg believes it is opening the gateway for commercial printers to move in to industrial production.
Shorter delivery times, greater flexibility and increased productivity could open up new market opportunities for print shops and make them more competitive.
The company added that the long perfecting press is appropriate for the Japanese market, which mainly employs 4/4 colours plus coating.
Print coatings help to protect against scratching, increase the scuff-resistance of the printed product and accelerate post-press operations.
Heidelberg introduced the Anicolor inking unit technology on a Speedmaster SM 52 four-colour press at the Ipex 06 exhibition.
It is claimed to allow the advantages of offset printing to be harnessed for very short runs as well as longer runs.
The company claimed that one benefit of the Speedmaster SM 52 with Anicolor inking is that it employs the Alcolor continuous dampening system, which uses commercially available printing plates.
The Anicolor short inking unit has a single inking form roller that provides each printing element on the plate with the volume of ink required throughout the entire run.
The Anicolor inking unit's temperature control system means that the amount of ink transferred to the relevant printing materials can be adapted over the printing form.
Heidelberg claimed that Anicolor is a unique system that ensures printing quality, consistency in the production run and easy operation.
The more standardised the print job processing is, the more the strengths of the system come in to their own.
The company added that the full potential of Anicolor technology is realised when it is combined with Prinect components and consistent standardisation.
The IGAS 2007 show begins today and runs until September 27.
