CIPPI awards have been won by two Heidelberg customers for cost-effective and efficient integration using workflow systems.

Liechtenstein company BVD Druck and Verlag won its prize for the biggest improvement in efficiency and customer responsiveness as a result of process automation Japanese company Yamazen Communication came second in the category for the best cost and benefit realisation BVD Druck and Verlag are integration specialists that started the networking of the company in 2003, with the process due be completed next year

BVD's reported return on investment (ROI) of 760 per cent over a five-year period is mainly due to shorter response times, greater customer and employee satisfaction, continuing process improvements and the ability to analyse production on a continuous basis without having to allocate additional resources.

The current system at BVD Druck and Verlag has JDF-based integration of all management, pre-press and press processes and will soon incorporate post-press due to Heidelberg's Prinect Postpress Manager, which is already in the process of being installed.

Once the Xerox iGen3 digital printing system has been linked using Heidelberg's Prinect Digital Print Manager next year, implementation of the JDF workflow will be complete.

BVD chief executive officer, Peter Goppel, said: "When we first made a start on process integration a few years ago, we were very sceptical as to the actual benefit for the company.

As a result, we are now even more certain that we made the right decision back then by investing in our long-term competitiveness." Yamazen Communications has been offering a web-to-print system since 2000.

To be able to produce a range of printed products with maximum efficiency and cost-effectiveness, Yamazen installed JDF-enabled Prinect pre-press and press products from Heidelberg, as well as a management information system of a third-party provider.

That enabled the company to reduce make-ready times and cut the amount of pre-press waste.

The integration system saves the company 160 minutes each day in job tracking and delivery scheduling.

In addition, each job takes 10 minutes less at the pre-press stage, achieving a claimed return on investment of 1,500 per cent.

Dr Jurgen Rautert, the chief technology officer at Heidelberg, said: "Integrated workflow systems from Heidelberg give users considerable economic advantages - the results of the CIPPI prize winners demonstrate this very clearly.

These results put a more objective slant on the debate in the sector as to the cost-effectiveness of workflow systems.".
