The majority of new wide-web presses and a growing number of narrow web and mid-web presses installed today are sleeved presses, so it's critical that our customers are informed of the differences." The seminar reviewed basic sleeve construction and how it differs from that of conventional journalled anilox rollers.
Because sleeves are mounted and changed, the impact of cumulative total indicator readings (TIR) between the press mandrel and anilox sleeve is explained and demonstrated, said Harper.
The ability to re-engrave differences between rolls and sleeves were also examined.
Speakers covered the specifics of proper sleeve handling, storage and cleaning and reviewed photographs of damaged and destroyed sleeves, whilst focusing on how to avoid such damage.
Delegates also toured Harper Corporation's anilox facility, where they saw how anilox sleeves are handled and laser-engraved, whilst they also visited the Harper Graphic Solutions laboratory, where Echocheks are analysed and all roll audits are prepared.
The laboratory has interferometer measurement capability, as well has microscopic photography and doctor blade angle measuring equipment.
Mike Huey, Harper Graphic Solutions' technical graphics advisor for the western division, explained: "In addition to the seminars we have customised the seminar for several customers.
We started in the south east and it has since spread across the country.
The personalised programmes are presented inside our customers' plants, training their employees on the care and maintenance of their sleeve inventories.
It's a successful programme that meets a very real need.
We continually update these seminars because sleeve technology continues to evolve.".
