The most recently installed Inca printer in the USA was in production only two days after it was delivered to Dallas digital print house The Colour Place Ink manufacturer Sericol supplied the Inca Eagle H

Sericol is the worldwide distributor for the UK made digital flatbed press, and for which it has developed a four-colour set of UV inks.

The Colour Place operates a completely digital workflow at its Texas site and its product line up reads like a Who's Who of digital output devices, so the company has a wealth of knowledge relating to the technology and the market.

However, the Inca Eagle H is its first digital flatbed press and it is the company's first move into UV inks, as Tommy Morgeson, vice president of operations, explained.

"We started 30 years ago in the photo lab market, so our background is in producing quality colour prints, then we moved into the production of computer generated slides in the mid eighties.

Since then we've become more and more digitised and today operate equipment from a wide range of leading vendors of digital output systems.

The work we produce varies from displays for museums that have to be durable for many years to bus wraps that have a life span of a few days.

But what all customers demand is speed and quality and this is exactly why we chose the Inca Eagle." The company carried out a significant amount of research before its decision and some of the most important comments it received came from other Inca users.

Without exception, the one thing they all said was that Inca printers simply did not break down.

"That is vital to us because you can see the quality of the print by looking at samples and you can get a good idea of speed by watching demonstrations but some of the companies we spoke to had been using Inca printers for at least two years so they had a very good experience of how reliable the equipment is in a real production environment," said Morgeson.

One of the reasons The Colour Place decided to invest in digital flatbed press technology is the ability it offers to print directly on to a rigid substrate, in the Eagle's case this can be up to 40mm thick.

"It is a very competitive market out there.

People expect high quality these days and everyone wants their jobs quickly but apart from the added value you can provide the biggest selling aid is to be able to produce the work cost effectively.

By eliminating so many of the finishing tasks required when printing on to a flexible substrate, the Eagle H will allow us to be extremely cost efficient," commented Morgeson.

He added that the press is very easy to use and he expects it to be in operation on a double shift within six months, with a payback period of around 18 months.

The digital flatbed press can handle work as large as 2.44 metres x 1.6 metres, in resolutions up to 1,200dpi.

The Eagle H can print edge-to-edge, whilst allowing images to be printed to bleed, removing the need for subsequent trimming.

Output speeds can be up to 100 square meters an hour, while substrates can vary from wood and board to textiles, plastic and foam.

Sericol has worked closely with Inca to develop its Uvijet range of UV inks for use with the digital flatbed press.

The inks are claimed to cure instantly when passed under the UV lamps incorporated within the Inca printer but remain stable in the printhead, ensuring reliability.

The four-colour process inks benefit from Sericol's Micro-V dispersion technology, which helps to create viable, durable ultra-wide gamut colours with high light fastness.

"We hadn't dealt with Sericol before this recent purchase but the company has given us a very professional and helpful service throughout all our negotiations.

Sericol has provided us with all the necessary training and we're now looking forward to using the Eagle H printer to produce live jobs on an on-going basis.

We certainly have a sales team that is very keen to promote its benefits to our customers," said Mr Morgeson.
