Trials of the UK's first Spyder inkjet printer have been so successful at Valley Printing in Bingley, West Yorkshire (UK) that the company has decided to buy the flatbed printer.

Trials of the UK's first Spyder inkjet printer from Inca Digital Printers have been so successful at Valley Printing in Bingley, West Yorkshire (UK) that the company has decided to buy the flatbed printer The company has been using the Spyder - which was launched at Drupa 2004 last October - to produce a wide range of work, from one-off point of sale work to multiple copies of high quality signs and displays

"Inca's Spyder has fitted in perfectly with our existing equipment, our culture and vision of the future, because we've always been a company that has enjoyed being innovative to overcome the challenges raised by handling materials that are normally difficult to print on," said production manager Jamie Fletcher.

Valley Printing is no stranger to Inca and has operated an Eagle machine for two years.

The company is also a long time customer of Sericol, which manufacturers the UV inks used in all of Inca's flatbed printers.

The West Yorkshire company is currently testing Sericol's new pigment UV inks on the Eagle and reports excellent results from the improved colour gamut available.

"The combination of Sericol's inks and Inca's Spyder have enabled us to produce near litho quality print on many substrates.

Early trials of lenticular printing have gone extremely well and because we can print directly on to the lens there are significant cost and time savings.

The Spyder has an excellent build quality and even this beta test model has proved to be very reliable.

We operate the printer 12 hours a day, consistently producing around 25 square metres an hour, so the Spectra inkjet heads have been well tested.

We've printed runs as high as 200 sheets of 60" x 40", while the ease of use and quick make-ready allows one-off jobs to be printed economically," said Fletcher.

Valley has its roots in the screen and litho sector, operating a UV Roland 600 plus multiple screen lines.

More recently the company has become a player in the permanent point-of-purchase (POP) arena.

"Inca's flatbed printers have complemented our move into POP perfectly.

Indeed, it's hard to imagine life without them.

I think if Inca had not existed three years ago we would have purchased another large format multi-unit litho press but the Eagle out performed all our expectations," said Fletcher.

"Inca is way ahead of any other inkjet flatbed technology on the market.

Each time the company launches another printer the industry makes a huge leap forward in what can be achieved and we believe this is what has happened with the introduction of the Spyder," he added.

The Spyder offers a number of output modes, producing resolutions from 400 dots per inch (dpi) to 1,000dpi, and has a maximum output of 50 square metres an hour, claimed Inca.

Features include the ability to print to edge on to a wide range of substrates up to 30mm thick.

The double, air cylinder operated registration system allows operators to print on the reverse side of a material using the same lay edge each time, enabling the image to be registered accurately.

The Spyder is supplied with a Wasatch version 5.1.1 software RIP, which accepts all popular file formats including Postscript 3, EPS, TIFF and PDF using both RGB and CMYK said Inca.

The Spyder has a fixed bed and moving print carriage using a vacuum table made from aluminium honeycomb to hold the substrate securely during printing.
