Gary Davidson of Wellingborough-based General Printers found himself on a winning streak when he was among the guests at a race night organised by Independent Paper's East Midlands regional office.

Gary managed to back the winner in five of the six races and in the sixth he had his bet returned because the horse he chose refused to go into the starting stalls.

"This is the first time we have organised a race night and it proved to be a really enjoyable event," said Paul Cassidy, product manager at Independent.

"Gary had a tipster's dream night - we even asked him to choose some lottery numbers to see if his luck rubbed off on us too".

Independent, which has its East Midlands office in Syston, Leicester, took three members of staff and around 18 invited guests to the city's Oadby racecourse for the evening which was sponsored by UPM.

Staff, customers and suppliers enjoyed a three-course meal in a hospitality suite giving them a perfect view of the finishing post.

The evening was so successful that Independent is already making plans for a second race night next year.

British-owned, Independent Paper has further regional offices in Swanley, Wakefield and Warrington and opened a new West Midlands branch in Dudley earlier in 2005.
