The Northcliffe Group has awarded a waste management contract to J and G Environmental, Blandford (UK) specialists in the recycling and disposal of printers' waste.

Northcliffe is one of the UK's largest regional newspaper publishers.

The 12-month rolling contract means that J and G will collect, recycle and dispose of all general print waste, including litho plates and used chemicals, from the Northcliffe Group's eight print centres in Plymouth, Staverton, Gloucester, Hull, Grimsby, Stoke, Leicester and Derby.

J and G's customer care manager Richard Spreadbury said: "We have worked closely with Northcliffe for some time and are very pleased to have been awarded the contract to carry on helping the group to ensure it meets its environmental responsibilities." John Kiely, general manager of The Northcliffe Press Plymouth, said: "The new contract reflects J and G's consistently professional and proactive approach to helping us meet the environmental challenges facing the printing industry.

With J and G's assistance we have recently achieved ISO14001 certification and we have a continuing programme of improvements designed to further improve our environmental performance." Effective waste management is an important element in Northcliffe's commitment to make sure the group has procedures in place to minimise environmental impact.

The group's Westcountry Publications and Northcliffe Press Plymouth won the CSR-Environmental newspaper company of the year in the Production Journal 2006 Newspaper Awards.

J and G looks after the waste disposal needs of around 1,500 UK printing companies.

The company's work includes the disposal of 135,000 litres of printers' liquid waste weekly, the annual collection of over 7,500 tonnes of aluminium litho plates for re-use in the printing industry.

The company currently recycles or re-uses nearly 85 per cent of the waste it collects and it is aiming to achieve 93 per cent in the near future.
