Balers Cut Newspaper Group's Landfill Waste

Installed at the suggestion of the group's specialist waste management contractors J and G Environmental, the new machines enable cardboard, reel wrappers, plastic and aluminium litho plates to be baled ready for collection.

John Kiely, general manager of The Northcliffe Press Plymouth, said: "The balers are already proving to be an indispensable item of equipment.

They improve our environmental performance by helping reduce the amount of waste going to landfill and cut our costs by reducing the number of collections needed, as well as improving our return on waste going to be recycled." He added: "Ensuring the most effective waste management procedures and equipment are in place is an important part of the group's commitment to minimise environmental impact." The Northcliffe operation at Stoke, Leicester and Derby each have two balers with Plymouth, Grimsby, Bristol and Staverton having one each.

To determine the viability of the project a pilot scheme was carried out at Staverton before the HSM 1160 eco vertical press was chosen as the preferred machine.

J and G Envirionmental said that it looks after the waste disposal needs of around 2,000 UK print companies and currently recycles or reuses nearly 85 per cent of the waste collected.

The aim is to achieve 93 per cent in the near future.
