J Jays has been awarded the pre-press contract for New Scientist, Reed Business Information's (RBI) weekly title.

J Jays has been awarded the pre-press contract for New Scientist, Reed Business Information's (RBI) weekly title The magazine becomes the final RBI journal to appoint the Southend (UK) based repro specialist as its supplier of remote workflow and pre-press services

For J Jays the prestigious contract win is the culmination of a strong collaborative relationship with RBI stretching over a number of years, said the company.

Eric Lambert, production and facilities director at RBI, commented: "New Scientist is a premium business-to-business publication, with a high circulation to maintain and a reputation of quality and excellence to uphold.

Its audience and subject matter demand the highest print quality and visual impact.

Due to this very strong emphasis on quality and ultra-fast turnaround times, there had historically been a feeling that we needed a London-based pre-press house.

However, J Jays' expertise in implementing remote workflow tools and our long-standing relationship has given us the confidence to award the contract to the company." One of the key stipulations made by New Scientist was to create a proofing workflow that would adhere to the proof4press standard set out by the Periodical Publishers Association (PPA).

It aims to ensure that both advertising and editorial pages are proofed to the same standard, giving printers the best chance of meeting the expectations of their customers.

To achieve that standard, J Jays invested in two DuPont Cromalin B3 proofing devices, which have been instrumental in achieving the level of quality and productivity required by New Scientist.

The Cromalin B3 is designed with DuPont's advanced DOD implementation, which is optimised for the accurate reproduction of 300 dots per inch (dpi) colour images.

The system outputs a double page spread with all colour print bars and printers' marks in position in four to seven minutes, depending on the speed option.

The proof is output on swellable polymer-coated paper, which instantly stabilises and dries the correctly formulated dye based inks.

In line with its sister product, the Cromalin B2, the B3 shares the features of the enhanced version.

Those include auto calibration, three speed options - quality, standard and fast - support for a wider range of colour bars and more management information on the proofs on profiles, paper, calibration and software, said J Jays.

Alan Halls, the managing director of J Jays, commented: "Purchasing the additional proofing engines was an important move for us as they had already been accredited by the PPA for proof4press.

In addition, the reliability and accuracy of the equipment means we can be 100 per cent confident that we are able to deliver on time, every time.

We are proud and delighted to add New Scientist to our portfolio as it affirms our capabilities as a service provider for the most demanding, quality-focused weekly titles, and shows that we can provide the highest standards using intelligent remote workflow solutions.".
