Delete hard drive data before selling old systems

A J J Bender product story
Edited by the Printingtalk editorial team Jul 2, 2010

J J Bender has introduced a hard drive security program for companies looking to protect sensitive data and prevent copier-related crimes such as identity theft.

The company said that several reports have highlighted the dangers related to copier and printer hard drives and, in particular, the growing number of cases where machines are re-sold or returned on lease, only to have the hard drives removed, and critical data extracted.

Jeffrey Bender, president of J J Bender, said: 'Like a computer, the internal hard drive on a digital printer stores a copy of everything you print or photocopy, and this security risk is often overlooked by companies.

He said that J J Bender's hard drive security program protects sensitive data by destroying hard drives in three ways, all of which are compliant with the most recent data erasure policies, such as DOD 5220-22M.

Options for hard drive protection include software overwrite, physical destruction, or reformatting the drives, and J J Bender can perform those services on site or at its own secure facility.

Alternatively, the company can provide clients with the necessary software to erase the hard drive.

J J Bender would issue a data erasure certificate for each machine, which is said to ensure hard drive safety, and increase the machine's value on the secondary market.

Bender commented: 'For large financial institutions or facility management companies it is absolutely critical that sensitive data be removed from any old printing equipment.

We're one of the few companies who can handle multiple machines at multiple locations in an expedient and timely manner.

For example, J J Bender was able to protect the data in over 100 machines for a financial institution.

This procedure took place on-site, and because it complied with data erasure standards, it increased the re-marketing value of the machines.
