KBA Metronic AG will be displaying the Genius 52UV 20-inch waterless sheetfed offset press at Graphics of the Americas/Xplor 2007 at the Miami Beach (USA) Convention Centre in hall C, stand 1070 The Genius 52UV sheetfed offset press is a four-unit or five-unit waterless press that uses KBA's Gravuflow inking unit and an integrated drying unit for the quick drying of UV inks, said the company

The technology enables the press to print individual cards for telephone and lottery use, as well as pre-paid cards, gift cards and membership cards, together with CDs and DVDs on a variety of plastic materials, such as PVC, ABS, PS, PE, PETand PC, as well as cardboard and paper in thicknesses ranging from 0.004" to 0.03''.

The machine is claimed to print up to 8,000 sheets per hour in the conventional 14.2" x 20.47'' format.

The Genius 52UV is said to be able to produce different products for a variety of markets, ranging from security printing, such as check and credit cards and includes long-wearing mouse pads, price labels and weather-resistant plant stickers, adhesive labels, lenticular lenses (3-D images) or advertising posters.

Many of those markets have been served by classic screen printers to date, added KBA but using UV inks means that the printed sheets can immediately be further processed and the job throughput time is significantly shortened.

The UV technology on the Genius 52UV press is claimed to produce a high quality product, whilst ensuring process reliability in in-line processes.

Newcomers to credit cards, screen printers or personalisation firms, in particular, who have often been frightened off by the complicated nature of offset technology are increasingly overcoming their initial reservations and are finding their way in to the printing field with the Genius 52UV, said KBA.

The concept of the KBA Metronic Genius 52UV is also said to be suitable for the requirements of companies in which the majority of printing jobs involve small and medium-sized runs, even for well-established offset printers.

The Genius 52UV offset sheet-fed printer can be equipped with an optional varnishing unit, which displays high gloss ratings, added the company.

The waterless UV short inking unit is also said to provide consistent, reproducible print quality and the lowest possible amount of run-up waste, with 10 sheets needed to make the machine ready.

The Genius 52UV press has all of the features to produce jobs that require short delivery times, smaller print runs and reduced production costs, it is claimed.

The Genius 52UV has an auto-plate changing feature with a new type of pneumatic lock-up and registration system for register-true mounting, said KBA.

New plates are guided in to the changing shafts whilst the guards are still in place and then automatically mounted.

At the end of the run, the used plates are ejected in to a disposal shaft, then removed manually.

A complete plate change on a four-colour press takes around five minutes, with change-over on a five-colour press taking six minutes, said KBA.

Printers can use either new analogue or computer-to-plate plates.

For beginners there is the possibility of starting out with analogue positive or negative waterless printing plates, added the company.

Printers who already have CTP can image waterless printing plates with the majority of thermal plate maker and the customer can choose from a variety of plate systems.

Keyless inking with the anilox roller Gravuflow inking system and short, temperature-controlled ink trains (with two jumbo rollers) are factors that both simplify operation (no roller adjustment) and minimise ghosting, said KBA.

The ink form roller, which is the same size as the blanket cylinder, is also outfitted with a blanket, whilst the short inking unit of the Genius 52UV also provides advantages in terms of time when changing inks.

KBA-Metronic AG also has other technology to discuss with visitors to Graphics of the Americas/Xplor.

A printing system known as the OC 200 developed by KBA-Metronic produces results in rich colours throughout the entire print run with low start-up waste, said the company.

The firm's Universys, a modular all-in-one personalisation system for plastic and paper cards personalises individual cards printing pin numbers, barcodes, serial numbers and scratch-off fields, as well as personal data.

The system is said to be suitable for the individualisation of tags, membership cards, pre-paid cards, chip cards and magnetic stripe cards.
