Robinson and Mornin, the Belfast (Northern Ireland) trade binders was looking to upgrade its old case binding line, particularly wanting to eradicate much of the handwork involved with head and tail bands and ribbons.
The Kolbus BF-511 Casebinding line was the answer.
Initially Trevor Robinson, Robinson and Mornin's managing director, saw the casebinding line when it was debuted at the last Drupa.
He then went to Kolbus's headquarters in Rahden (Germany) to look in more detail and he liked what he saw.
Not only is it the first of the new generation of Compact lines, but it is the first ever installation of any fully automatic casebinding line in Ireland, claimed Kolbus.
Totally computerised and automated the Kolbus BF 511 has automatic ribbon pick up, head and tail banding and rounding and backing.
The new casebinding line is the latest machine installation in the long-term planned expansion at Robinson and Mornin.
Still based at the same address at which it started a quarter of a century ago, it has grown from an original single unit of 2,000 square feet to the current three units and 14,000 square feet.
Ireland is the main market for Robinson and Mornin, which as true trade binders, also produces perfect bound products, sewn and drawn-on covers and ring binders.
The Kolbus BF 511 will help it to be even more competitive, particularly on quality, in its home market and, increasingly, abroad.
Trevor Robinson said: "We are seeing an increase in this kind of work - ribbons for the diary market and head and tail bands for the art book market particularly.
But apart from the automation what really appealed about this line was the high quality of the rounding and backing".
And Trevor Thomas, the sales manager of Kolbus UK, commenterd: "The BF 511 Compact casing-in line has satisfied a need for a short to medium run machine.
Demand for a reasonably priced machine is certainly present and our two installations already this year in the UK would confirm that.".
