Perfect Binder For Magazines Proven At St Ives

A Kolbus UK product story
Edited by the Printingtalk editorial team Jun 12, 2007

With a claimed top speed of 15,000 copies per hour (cph) and a nine-station gatherer connected to a 30 clamp binder, St Ives Peterborough has bought a new Kolbus Publica perfect binding line.

Installed behind the HD152 trimmer will be a Buhrs four-station insert line linked to wrapping and packing machines.

That configuration will enable the site to operate a range of products, from catalogues and brochures to guide books and directories, as well as its core magazine output.

The Kolbus machine has a ZU 811 gathering system, often nicknamed the 'vacuum gatherer', that uses suckers and a vacuum belt to separate sections.

They are then fed directly in to the gatherer without requiring drums or 90-degree turns in the direction of travel.

Other features of the line include a card gluer, Kolbus Co-Pilot make-ready with touch-screen controls and electro-static charging heads for improved attachment of inserts and control of finished bundles.

St Ives Peterborough's general manager, Ian Smith, said: "This investment in the very latest perfect binding technology represents an exciting phase in our development and gives us much greater control of the growing number of projects requiring this type of process.

It means clients will be able to benefit from a full in-house finishing service with complete security of supply." Robert Flather, managing director Kolbus UK, added: "The Publica has established itself as the industry standard binder for the magazine market and Kolbus UK is very pleased that St Ives has chosen Kolbus for its second binding line in three years.".
